Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science + Music at UIUC is a distinctive interdisciplinary program jointly offered by the School of Music in the College of Fine & Applied Arts and the Department of Computer Science in the Grainger College of Engineering. It is designed for students who want to explore the intersection of music, technology, and computing.

This program prepares students for careers in music production, audio engineering, composition, and sound design, while also supporting pathways to graduate study in music technology or computer science. Students receive foundational training in music theory, history, musicianship, and computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and audio computing.

Course overview by year:

  • Year 1: Music theory and musicianship I, Intro to CS I & II, Calculus I, Language Gen Ed

  • Year 2: Advanced music theory, Data structures, Discrete structures, Keyboard proficiency, Computation & Music, Matrix theory

  • Year 3: Musicology, Audio Computing Lab, Algorithms, Electronic Music Synthesis, General Eds

  • Year 4: Senior Thesis/Project (MUS 299), Advanced CS electives, Music electives, Free electives to reach 120 credits

The curriculum requires at least 40 hours of upper-division coursework, and students must demonstrate keyboard proficiency (unless majoring in keyboard).
