Program Overview

The Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts (BCSA) is an innovative intercollege degree jointly offered by the College of Fine Arts (CFA) and the School of Computer Science (SCS). It integrates rigorous technical training in computer science with intensive study in a fine arts discipline, designed for students who want to bridge technology and creativity.

This program provides a strong foundation in both computational theory and artistic practice, ideal for emerging interdisciplinary fields such as game design, computer animation, computer music, recording technologies, interactive stagecraft, robotic art, and emerging media.

Course Overview:

  • General Education Concentration: Writing (1 course, 9 units, 76-101 required), Mathematics (2 courses, 20 units minimum, 21-122 and either 21-259, 21-266 or 21-241 required), Probability (1 course, 9 units minimum), Science & Engineering (2 courses, 18 units minimum), Economic, Political, & Social Institutions OR Cognition, Choice & Behavior (1 course, 9 units minimum), Two additional courses from Dietrich or CFA (2 course, 18 units minimum), University Requirement (1 course, 3 units, 99-101 required), BXA Required Courses

  • Fine Arts Concentration: Architecture (108 units), Art (114 units), Design (108 units), Drama (130 units), Music (108 units)

  • Computer Science Concentration: Core Requirements - Principles of Imperative Computation, Principles of Functional Programming, Parallel and Sequential Data Structures and Algorithms, Introduction to Computer Systems, Great Ideas in Theoretical Computer Science

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Interdisciplinary studio courses combining computing and art
