This program is ideal for students passionate about flying and aviation technology, offering extensive flight training alongside academic coursework to earn FAA certifications and build the flight hours needed for airline careers.

Curriculum Structure:

  • Year 1: Students start with foundational courses such as AVN 150 – Introduction to Aviation and general education classes that build critical thinking and communication skills. Early flight training begins with ground school courses like Private Pilot-SEL: Ground and initial flight lessons, introducing students to basic flight principles and safety.

  • Year 2: The second year advances flight training through courses like AVN 302A – Commercial Pilot-SEL: Flight II and AVN 303A – Commercial Pilot-SEL: Flight III, where students develop their single-engine commercial pilot skills. Ground courses such as AVN 315 – Aviation Safety Programs and AVN 335 – Weather Reporting/Analysis deepen understanding of aviation safety and meteorology.

  • Year 3: In year three, students continue flight training with multi-engine instruction in AVN 305 – Multi-Engine Pilot (MEL): Ground and AVN 305A – Multi-Engine: Flight, while also studying AVN 330 – Crew Resource Management to enhance teamwork and communication in the cockpit. Leadership and decision-making skills are developed in AVN 370 – Aviation Supervision and Leadership and AVN 390 – Aviation Decision Making.

  • Year 4: The final year focuses on advanced flight instruction and preparation for professional roles. Students complete AVN 415 – Instructor Pilot-SEL: Ground and AVN 415A – Instructor Pilot-SEL: Flight to qualify as Certified Flight Instructors (CFI). Courses like AVN 435 – Turbine Aircraft Systems and AVN 460 – Aviation Law provide technical expertise and regulatory knowledge essential for airline and corporate aviation careers.

Focus areas: Professional pilot training, flight instruction, aviation safety, crew resource management, and aviation law.

Learning outcomes: Graduates will be qualified to obtain FAA pilot certifications, including private, commercial, multi-engine, instrument, and instructor ratings, and will possess leadership and decision-making skills critical to professional aviation careers.

Professional alignment (Accreditation): The program is FAA Part 141 approved and offers the unique 1,000-hour Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) pathway, enabling graduates to qualify for the R-ATP certificate sooner than traditional routes.

Reputation (Employability rankings): Eastern Kentucky University is recognised nationally for its comprehensive flight training program and is the only Kentucky university offering the FAA-approved 1,000-hour R-ATP pathway, giving graduates a competitive edge in the pilot job market.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Eastern Kentucky University’s BS Aviation – Professional Flight program offers an immersive, hands-on learning experience with access to top-tier facilities and resources designed to prepare you for a successful career as a professional pilot.

You will gain practical flight skills and aviation knowledge through extensive use of EKU’s dedicated aviation facilities and tools, including:

  • Central Kentucky Regional Airport: Located just 15 minutes from campus, this airport serves as the base for EKU’s flight training operations. It features a 5,000-foot runway, medium intensity lighting, ample parking, dedicated fuel services, and onsite aircraft maintenance, providing a professional environment for your flight training.

  • Robust fleet of training aircraft: You’ll train on 27 Cessna single-engine aircraft (models including 172-P, 172-N, 172-M, 172-R, 172-S, and 172-S G1000) and 3 Piper Seminole multi-engine aircraft, offering diverse hands-on flying experience.

  • Advanced flight simulators: EKU provides access to the Alsim MC200 flight simulator, capable of simulating up to 15 different aircraft types, and the Professional Flight Controls DCX MAX with glass cockpit capabilities. These simulators replicate real cockpit environments, allowing you to practice flying and instrument procedures safely on the ground, which is particularly helpful for instrument rating preparation and proficiency checks.

  • FAA-approved Part 141 flight program: EKU’s program meets rigorous FAA standards, enabling you to earn flight certifications including Private Pilot, Instrument Pilot, Commercial Pilot (single and multi-engine), and Certified Flight Instructor ratings. The program also benefits from FAA special authority, allowing graduates to qualify for the restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) certificate at 1,000 flight hours instead of the usual 1,500.

  • New Flight Training Centre: This $25 million state-of-the-art facility at Central Kentucky Regional Airport (opening early 2027) will include simulator labs, maintenance space, classrooms, and briefing rooms, enhancing your learning environment and training capacity.

  • Strong industry connections and career support: EKU maintains partnerships with major airlines and aviation organisations, providing internship opportunities, career pathways, and a 100% job placement rate for graduates.

  • Comprehensive curriculum: Alongside flight training, you’ll take courses in aviation management, safety, aircraft systems, air traffic control, and aviation law, preparing you for leadership roles in the aerospace industry.
