B.S. in Civil Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lehigh University

Program Overview

The B.S. in Civil Engineering at Lehigh University prepares students to address the conception, planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of major infrastructure, including bridges, buildings, transportation facilities, tunnels, dams, foundations, and waterways. The program suits students who want a rigorous engineering education combining mathematics and science with civil engineering design, materials, structures, water resources, geotechnical engineering, and environmental engineering.

Curriculum structure

First Year: Students establish their mathematical, scientific, communication, and engineering foundations through MATH 021, MATH 022, PHY 011, PHY 012, and CHM 030, alongside engineering and writing courses. ENGR 005 and ENGR 010 introduce students to engineering concepts and approaches that support their later civil engineering coursework.

Second Year: Students begin focused civil engineering study with CEE 003 – Engineering Statics, CEE 059 – Strength of Materials, and CEE 101 – Introduction to Civil Engineering. Through CEE 101, students explore surveying, site usage and land development, project constraints, water management, and computer-aided drawing, while CEE 089 – Professional Development I introduces professional ethics, licensure, career paths, and the role of civil engineers in industry and government.

Third Year: The curriculum expands into major civil engineering disciplines through CEE 122 – Fluid Mechanics, CEE 123 – Civil Engineering Materials, CEE 142 – Soil Mechanics, CEE 159 – Structural Analysis I, CEE 170 – Introduction to Environmental Engineering, and CEE 222 – Water Resources Engineering. Students learn to analyze fluid systems, construction materials, soils, structural behavior, environmental challenges, and water-resource systems.

Fourth Year: Students apply their technical foundation through advanced courses and approved civil engineering electives, with options such as CEE 242 – Geotechnical Engineering, CEE 262 – Fundamentals of Structural Steel Design, and CEE 264 – Fundamentals of Structural Concrete Design. These studies allow students to deepen their understanding of foundations and earthen infrastructure, structural design, and engineering solutions for complex civil projects while preparing for professional practice or graduate study.

Focus areas: Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering materials, transportation/infrastructure, site development and surveying.

Learning outcomes: Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems; apply engineering design to meet specified needs while considering public health, safety, environmental, social, economic, and global factors; communicate effectively; function effectively on teams; conduct experimentation and analyze data; develop engineering solutions using appropriate tools; and apply professional and ethical responsibilities.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The B.S. in Civil Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.

Reputation (employability rankings): Lehigh Engineering reports that 96% of its Class of 2023 was employed, continuing education, or pursuing military or volunteer service within six months of graduation, with an overall average starting salary of $82,823. The Rossin College also reports that 40% of undergraduates conduct research and identifies major employers including Amazon, Deloitte, Lockheed Martin, Merck, and PwC.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The B.S. in Civil Engineering at Lehigh University combines rigorous technical coursework with practical laboratory instruction, design activities, research opportunities, and professional experiences. Students have access to the Fritz Engineering Laboratory and STEPS Building laboratories, where civil engineering research and instruction cover structural, geotechnical, water-resources, and environmental engineering, while the department also provides opportunities for co-op, internships, undergraduate research, and hands-on project work.

Students can develop practical, professional, and research skills through:

  • Fritz Engineering Laboratory: Civil engineering laboratories in Fritz Lab support structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, and environmental engineering instruction and research. The structural facilities include dynamic testing machines and a five-million-pound universal hydraulic testing machine.
  • STEPS Building laboratories: The department also operates laboratories in the STEPS Building, providing additional facilities for civil and environmental engineering research and instruction.
  • Laboratory-based environmental engineering: Civil and environmental engineering coursework includes experiments involving soil, sludge, water, solute transport, and water/wastewater treatment, allowing students to apply engineering principles to environmental problems.
  • Community-based projects: CEE 284 – Practicum for Community Based Design and Solutions uses hands-on, project-based work in which interdisciplinary teams address local and international projects while working directly with community stakeholders.
  • Team-based design: Civil engineering students encounter interdisciplinary and team-based design work, including projects that involve students from different departments or colleges working together on civil and environmental engineering problems.
  • Professional development and capstone preparation: CEE 289 – Professional Development II introduces design practice, professional conduct, ethics, communication, project management, company operations, and the development of capstone project proposals and presentations by student design teams.
  • Internships: ENGR 160 – Engineering Internship allows students with at least junior standing to complement their coursework with professional work experience; the course carries 1–3 credits and requires preapproval.
  • Co-op opportunities: The Civil and Environmental Engineering department specifically identifies co-op and international experience opportunities for undergraduate students, giving students pathways to gain experience beyond the classroom.
  • Undergraduate research: The department provides undergraduate research opportunities, enabling students to engage with civil and environmental engineering research alongside their academic studies.
  • Independent study: CEE 480 – Independent Study allows students to undertake intensive study in civil and environmental engineering topics not normally covered by formal courses, with faculty supervision and a possible written report.
  • Professional engineering experience: Undergraduate internships and other professional work experiences are available through the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, with eligible work assignments capable of earning free-elective credit.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The B.S. in Civil Engineering at Lehigh University prepares graduates for careers in civil engineering and related professional fields, with opportunities to develop into practitioners, innovators, and future leaders. The program also prepares students for professional licensure or certification and for further graduate study, including engineering, engineering management, or business-related programs.

Typical job roles: Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Transportation Engineer.
