Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Program Overview

The Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a 4-year, on-campus, ABET-accredited program designed for students who want to create resilient infrastructure while developing expertise across structural, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, planning, and project management areas. Students learn through WPI’s project-based approach, combining engineering fundamentals with design, analysis, sustainability, and real-world civil engineering projects.

Curriculum structure

First Year: Students build their mathematical, scientific, and engineering foundation through courses such as MA 1021 – Calculus I, CH 1010 – Chemical Properties, Bonding, and Forces, and CE 2030 – Civil and Environmental Engineering: Professional Opportunities and Skills. The Great Problems Seminar (GPS) also introduces collaborative problem-solving, allowing students to work in groups on real-world problems from their first year.

Second Year: Students move into core civil engineering concepts with CE 2000 – Analytical Mechanics I, CE 2001 – Analytical Mechanics II, and CE 2020 – Land Surveying, developing skills in structural analysis, engineering mechanics, and surveying. Courses such as CE 2030 and CE 3020 – Project Management also connect technical learning with professional practice and project delivery.

Third Year: Students deepen their civil engineering knowledge through subjects such as CE 3006 – Design of Steel Structures, CE 3041 – Soil Mechanics, and CE 3050 – Traffic Engineering, covering structural, geotechnical, and transportation applications. WPI’s project-based curriculum also gives students opportunities to apply these concepts through major project experiences and interdisciplinary work.

Fourth Year: Advanced study can include CE 4007 – Matrix Analysis of Structures, CE 4044 – Foundation Engineering, and CE 4061 – Hydrology, allowing students to develop deeper expertise in structural, geotechnical, and water-resource engineering. Students can further customize their degree through electives or a concentration and may also pursue WPI’s accelerated BS/MS in Civil Engineering pathway.

Focus areas: Structural and geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering and water resources, transportation, urban and environmental planning, construction engineering and project management.

Learning outcomes: Apply mathematics, science, and engineering principles; analyze and solve civil engineering problems; develop innovative design solutions; work effectively on interdisciplinary teams; communicate technical information; address sustainability and societal challenges; and develop professional and lifelong-learning skills.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The Civil Engineering BS program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under its General Criteria and Civil Engineering Program Criteria.

Reputation (employability rankings): WPI reports #2 for career outcomes in engineering according to LinkedIn’s 2025 Top Colleges data, while its university-wide career recognition includes #15 for Best Career Placement by The Princeton Review (2026) and #13 for Best Programs for Internships/Co-ops by U.S. News & World Report (2027).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is strongly focused on learning by doing, with students applying engineering principles through laboratory work, design projects, and WPI’s project-based curriculum. Students can work with specialized civil engineering facilities, conduct experiments with structural and materials systems, use surveying and geospatial technologies, and gain professional experience through internships and WPI’s signature Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) and Major Qualifying Project (MQP):

  • Major Qualifying Project (MQP): As a culminating undergraduate experience, students complete an engineering project in their major, applying civil engineering knowledge to a substantial real-world problem and working in a project environment.
  • Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP): Students investigate the relationship between science, technology and society through an interdisciplinary project, often working with external organizations and communities.
  • Structural Engineering Laboratory: Students gain hands-on experience investigating structural behavior and engineering materials through laboratory experimentation and testing.
  • Geotechnical Engineering: Civil engineering students work with soil and foundation concepts through laboratory-based activities involving geotechnical testing and analysis.
  • Construction and materials: Practical coursework exposes students to construction materials and engineering testing, connecting classroom theory with the behavior and performance of materials used in infrastructure.
  • Surveying and geomatics: Students develop practical skills in surveying and spatial data collection, supporting applications in land development, construction and infrastructure engineering.
  • Project-based learning: WPI’s curriculum integrates substantial project work rather than relying exclusively on traditional classroom instruction, allowing students to collaborate, investigate problems and produce engineering solutions.
  • Internships and professional experience: WPI provides students with access to career development, internships and cooperative education opportunities, allowing civil engineering students to gain experience in professional engineering environments.
  • Research opportunities: Undergraduate students can participate in faculty-led research and use engineering laboratories and facilities for projects in areas such as structural engineering, transportation, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering and construction.

Facilities and project resources: Students have access to WPI’s engineering laboratories and project spaces, supported by specialized equipment for civil engineering experimentation, design and research.
