The B.S. in Environmental Engineering at Lehigh University is a 4-year, on-campus bachelor’s program that prepares students to develop engineering solutions to environmental challenges while balancing public health, economic growth, and environmental protection. Students build foundations in mathematics, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and engineering before advancing into areas such as water resources, environmental chemistry, waste management, biological processes, and environmental remediation.
Curriculum structure
First Year: Students establish their scientific and engineering foundation through MATH 021 – Calculus I, CHM 030 – General Chemistry, PHY 011 – General Physics I, and ENGR 005/010. Writing courses WRT 001 and WRT 002 also develop the communication skills needed to present technical ideas effectively.
Second Year: Students begin applying their foundational knowledge to environmental engineering through CEE 170 – Introduction to Environmental Engineering, CEE 272 – Environmental Risk Assessment, and CHM 031 – Chemical Equilibria in Aqueous Systems. EES 022 and the Earth Science requirement broaden students’ understanding of environmental systems, while mathematics and physics continue to support engineering analysis.
Third Year: The curriculum becomes more specialized with CEE 375 – Environmental Engineering Processes, CEE 274 – Environmental Water Chemistry, and CEE 142, supported by CHE 031 and CHM 110/111. Students study physical, chemical, and microbiological processes used for drinking-water treatment, wastewater, hazardous-waste management, air-pollution control, and environmental remediation.
Fourth Year: Students consolidate their technical expertise through CEE 378 – Hazardous Waste Treatment and Management, CEE 275 – Environmental, Geotechnics and Hydraulics Laboratory, and CEE 377 – Environmental Engineering Capstone Design Project. Approved environmental engineering electives allow students to develop proficiency across the four designated focus areas: water supply and resources, environmental chemistry, waste management, and biological processes.
Focus areas: Water supply and resources, environmental chemistry, waste management, biological processes, environmental remediation, environmental risk assessment, water chemistry, and environmental engineering processes.
Learning outcomes: Complex engineering problem solving; engineering design considering public health, safety, environmental, social and economic factors; technical communication; ethical and professional judgment; teamwork and leadership; experimentation and data analysis; and the ability to acquire and apply new knowledge.
Professional alignment (accreditation): The B.S. in Environmental Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Environmental Engineering and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.
Reputation (employability rankings): Lehigh University reports that 93% of 2025 Rossin College graduates were employed, continuing education, or engaged in other pursuits within six months of graduation, with an average Rossin College starting salary of $85,000; Environmental Engineering graduates had an average starting salary of $72,302. Lehigh also reports that 88% of its 2025 graduates completed at least one internship or experiential-learning opportunity, while QS lists Lehigh University at #=668 in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
The B.S. in Environmental Engineering at Lehigh University combines classroom study with hands-on laboratory work, research, design projects, and opportunities to work with faculty, industry, and government-sponsored projects. Students learn in the LEED-certified STEPS Building and other Civil and Environmental Engineering facilities, where they can investigate issues such as water treatment, pollution control, waste management, and environmental remediation while developing teamwork and professional skills.
Students gain practical experience through:
Graduates of the B.S. in Environmental Engineering are prepared for careers in environmental engineering and related professional fields, with the program emphasizing engineering problem-solving, environmental design, experimentation, teamwork, and professional development. Lehigh’s environmental engineering graduates can pursue roles such as Environmental Engineer, Water Resources Engineer, Environmental Consultant, and Sustainability/Environmental Specialist, while the program also supports progression toward professional licensure and further study.
Career development and employment opportunities include:
Further Academic Progression: Graduates can continue into graduate-level environmental engineering or related engineering programs, pursue additional professional training, research, or advanced specialization, and work toward relevant professional licensure or certification. Lehigh’s Civil & Environmental Engineering department also offers graduate study and research opportunities, providing a pathway from the B.S. into advanced academic and professional development.
