BS Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Texas Austin

Program Overview

The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) offers a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering through its world-renowned Cockrell School of Engineering. The 4-year program is designed to provide students with an even balance of basic engineering principles and modern-day technological applications. Students are taught the skills and knowledge needed to design, analyze, and innovate within a wide range of industry sectors encompassing energy, manufacturing, robotics, automobile, aerospace, and biomedical industries. The curriculum is planned to prepare the students for not just technical roles but also leadership and advanced studies.

Curriculum Design:

UT Austin Mechanical Engineering curriculum is carefully planned to have balanced theory and practice. The students go through a blend of:

  • Foundational Courses: High emphasis on mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computation, which serve as the foundation for higher-level engineering courses.

  • Core Mechanical Engineering Subjects: Covering subjects such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, heat transfer, dynamics, controls, design, and manufacturing.

  • Lab and Design Experience: Courses such as ME 302 (Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Design and Graphics) and ME 266K (Thermal-Fluid Systems Laboratory) offer hands-on experience in applying what one learns in real application.

  • Senior Design Project (Capstone): In the fourth year, students design in groups to solve complex engineering issues for real clients using what they have learned during their course of study.

  • Electives and Specialization Tracks: Students have the option to specialize in robotics, nanotechnology, sustainable energy, or biomechanics depending on interest and career goals.

Accreditation

The curriculum is fully accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, which ensures employers and students that the education is of professional excellence accepted everywhere in the world.

Campus Location:

UT Austin's campus is located in Austin, Texas, a fast-growing and thriving American city. Students have access to cutting-edge labs, research centers, and team settings within the Cockrell School of Engineering, as well as a vibrant local tech and innovation ecosystem.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

UT Austin is strongly committed to learning through doing and offers numerous ways for students to learn by doing:

  • Undergraduate Research Experience: Undergraduates can work with professors on cutting-edge research projects in the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Research Program (ME URP), exploring such areas as renewable energy, robotics, and materials science.

  • Internships and Industry Connections: Because of UT Austin's wide-ranging connections with companies like Tesla, General Motors, Boeing, Dell, NASA, and numerous startups, many students receive internships that provide valuable industry experience before graduation.

  • Student Organizations and Competitions: Longhorn Racing (Formula SAE), Texas Robotics, ASME, and Women in Mechanical Engineering (WME) offer chances for collaboration, competition, and leadership skills development.

  • Global Experiences: Texas Global provides opportunities through study abroad programs, international research programs, and cross-border internships, broadening student global perspectives.

Progression & Future Opportunities

UT Austin's Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC) offers students many resources to help guide their careers:

  • Individualized advising and career guidance

  • Resume and interview skills workshops

  • Company information sessions, networking receptions, and career fairs with leading employers

  • Major corporate and government agency on-campus recruiting
