Courses engage multifaceted histories of indigenous communities; settlement; colonialism; migration; and social, economic, cultural and political change. Majors develop the methodological, theoretical and research skills to conduct independent interdisciplinary research. The American Studies department is also distinct in commitment to community-based learning.

Common Application, Coalition Application OR QuestBridge Application, Amherst College Writing Supplement, School Report, Secondary School Transcript high school diploma or its recognized equivalent is required before enrolling at Amherst College, Counselor Recommendation, Two Teacher Recommendations, Standardized Test Results, either self-reported or official, for the SAT or ACT, English Proficiency Requirements: 100 on the internet-based TOEFL iBT: 25 or above recommended for each section, 75 on the paper-delivered TOEFL: 25 or above recommended for each section, 7.5 overall band score on IELTS Academic: 7.5 or above recommended for each component score
