Program Overview

The Latin American Studies Program was established at Birmingham-Southern in 1992, as a key part of the College's efforts to internationalize the campus community. The increasing emphasis on commercial and cultural exchanges within the Western Hemisphere, along with the impressive growth of Alabama's Latino population in recent years, make it vitally important for students to understand the social, political, economic, and cultural dimensions of Latin America, as well as the languages spoken in the region. The spirit of the Latin American Studies Program is truly interdisciplinary. It draws from the social sciences, natural sciences, and the humanities. Its faculty and students recognize that Latin America is a complex region that can only be understood by making connections among the different areas in our curriculum.Birmingham-Southern offers students a variety of courses related to Latin America, as well as the option to minor in Latin American Studies. Students are encouraged to participate in study abroad opportunities. Every Spring, the College hosts the Latin American Studies Symposium, an interdisciplinary undergraduate research conference that draws students from colleges and universities across the country.Through these web pages, we hope to provide access to information about our Latin American Studies Program and the faculty and students behind the program, along with various resources for those interested in learning more about this fascinating region of the world.
