Birmingham-Southern College was formed by the merger of Southern University, founded in Greensboro, Alabama, in 1856, and Birmingham College, founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1898. On May 30, 1918, these two institutions merged under the name Birmingham-Southern College.

1. Visual and Preforming Arts Scholarship
These renewable scholarships are given to students who have been admitted to the college and plan to study theater, musical theater, art, art history, or music. It is a must for high school seniors to either audition or submits a portfolio and interview with fine arts faculty, usually at the BSC Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship Day.
Eligibility Criteria /Scholarship Guidelines
It is only open for students who are interested in attending Birmingham-Southern College. Art Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a portfolio and an interview with each participant. The portfolio should contain only two-dimensional work. Three-dimensional work and large work should be presented as photographs or on CD/DVD. The portfolio should be no larger than 30 inches on either side. Portfolios should be brought to the Doris Wainwright Kennedy Art Center on the day of the Fine & Performing Arts Scholarship competition.
The portfolio should include:
Short written artist statement, Perspective from life, not from a photograph, Still life drawing in line, Still life drawing in value, Still life in color, Portrait or self-portrait in graphite from life, not from a photograph, Hand or foot from life, not from a photograph, Sketchbooks are encouraged. In addition to the required basic drawings, please include sketchbooks and/or examples of work done in disciplines other than drawings, such as paintings that fit within the 30-inch maximum size, photographs, prints, or mixed-media work.
Art History Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a writing sample and an interview with each candidate. The writing sample should be a one- to two-page visual analysis of artwork of the student's choosing and should include a scanned or photocopied reproduction of the artwork analyzed. Writing samples should be brought to the Doris Wainwright Kennedy Art Center on the day of the competition. Tours of the Azar Art Studios, Durbin Gallery, digital computer lab, and campus tours will be offered, as well as the opportunity to talk informally with current students, recent graduates, and parents of art students.
2. Transfer Student Scholarship
Birmingham Southern’s new Explorations curriculum changes general education away from a more traditional, “check-box” approach. Which highlights disciplinary requirements to one that pressures the importance of what students learn to do. This new pedagogy of doing is delineated by requirements that guide students in learning how to communicate productively, solve complex problems in innovative ways, connect their coursework to the vaster world, employ with their social and political world, and employ in self-directed teaching and learning. These are the specific skills and outlooks that professional schools, graduate schools, and employers are searching in today’s increasingly complex and inter-connected world.

To be eligible for this scholarship candidate must fulfill the criteria
Minimum GPA:
To be admitted to Birmingham-Southern College as a transfer student, an applicant must have been a student in good standing with a clear academic and social record at the collegiate institution in which last enrolled and, in addition, must have at least a “C” average (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) on a full schedule of courses attempted and acceptable to Birmingham-Southern.

Official high school transcripts, as well as official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities, are required.
SAT Scores:
Official standardized test scores are required.
Essay:
Submit an original personal statement to the College. The form for this statement is provided with the application materials.
