The Greek language encompasses thousands of years of history. Because of Greece's formative impact on Western societies and the continued influence of its diaspora, students are drawn to the language for many reasons. Both heritage speakers and non-Greek students choose to learn the language in order to become acquainted with Greek culture, do research, or pursue studies in disciplines with roots in Hellenic culture such as philosophy, science, history, literature, art, archaeology, and medicine.
