Queens College

Queens College, also known as QC, is a public college in New York City's Queens Borough. It is a campus of the City University of New York.

Queens College History

Before Queens College was founded in 1937, the campus was home to the Jamaica Academy, a one-room schoolhouse built in the early nineteenth century where Walt Whitman once taught. The structure was on Flushing-Jamaica Road (later renamed Kissena Boulevard). Meanwhile, County Judge Charles S. Colden appointed and chaired a committee to investigate the viability of establishing a free college in Queens. The committee recommended the establishment of such a college in September 1935. Mayor La Guardia backed the recommendation and pushed for the free college's creation. The Board of Education designated the former Parental School site as the future location of Queens College in March 1937. The college opened in October 1937, a month later than planned due to painters' strike, with 21 faculty members and 400 students in its inaugural freshmen class.

 Queens College is a liberal arts college with 78 undergraduate majors, over 100 master's degrees, over 40 accelerated master's options, 20 doctoral degrees through the CUNY Graduate Center, and a number of advanced certificate programmes. It is also one of seven schools that participate in the CUNY Macaulay Honors College. Queens College offers a Freshman Honors Program as well as a TIME 2000 programme for future math educators. Non-credit courses in fields such as health care, real estate, and risk management are available through the college's Professional & Continuing Studies programme.

   Queens College's USP/Achievements include being ranked eighth in the United States in the Princeton Review's 2012 edition of "America's Best Value Colleges." In the Newsweek/Kaplan 2008 College Guide, Queens College was ranked as one of the "25 Hottest Universities" in 2008. Queens College was ranked second in the nation in Washington Monthly's "Best Bang for Your Buck" college guide in 2013. Queens College was named one of The Princeton Review's top 322 green campuses in 2015. Queens College was ranked #4 by Business Insider as one of the "24 Colleges with the Best Return on Investment" in 2020.

Queens College infrastructure & services

Queens College Campuses

 The 80-acre Queens College campus, located off Kissena Boulevard, is perched on a 100-foot-high hill with a panoramic view of Manhattan. However, contrary to popular belief, it is not located on Queens' highest point. Six of the original Spanish-style buildings from the early twentieth century still stand, including Jefferson Hall, which was built in 1907. The college has since grown to over 40 buildings, including Powdermaker Hall, which was rebuilt in 2003 and named after the college's distinguished anthropologist Hortense Powdermaker.

Queens College Libraries

   Queens College Library (QCL) was founded in Klapper Hall in 1955. The library relocated to the newly constructed Benjamin S. Rosenthal library building in 1988, named after the late New York Congressman and consumer advocate Benjamin S. Rosenthal. The library, which serves as a hub for student and faculty research, houses over 840,000 volumes, one million or more ebooks, over 59,000 ejournals, and over 86,000 streaming videos. The Aaron Copland School of Music building houses the music library, which houses the largest music collection in the CUNY system.

Queens College Housing services

       Students housing department provides housing services at Queens College. The Summit Apartments, Queens College's first residence hall, opened in 2009. This low-rise, 506-bed facility is located in the heart of campus. Queens College remains primarily a commuter school, with only 500 of it’s over 19,000 students residing on campus. The building has been awarded a gold LEED certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), an organization that certifies buildings for meeting environmentally sustainable construction standards. The residence hall at Queens College has study lounges on each floor, wireless internet, laundry services, and a state-of-the-art fitness centre. The Summit Apartments also have full-size kitchen appliances, dining areas, microwaves, couches, entertainment stands, and music practise rooms.

Queens College Medical services

  Health services provide medical services to Queens College. The Health Services Center's mission is to provide free or low-cost resources, consultations, referrals, and educational programmes to help people achieve their optimal well-being. The centre provides individual and group health education and counselling to students, staff, and faculty. First aid, medical assessment and referrals, immunizations, blood pressure checks, DMV vision tests, and nicotine replacement products are among the free walk-in services available.

   Over 100 different student clubs and organisations exist at Queens College, ranging from fraternities and sororities to cultural, religious, technology, and art clubs. The majority of the organisations are housed within the Student Union. Queens College sports and fitness

  Many gyms and fitness centres on campus offer sports and fitness services to Queens College students. The Fitness Center, located on the second floor of the Fitzgerald Gym complex, is used by both students and community members. Treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, rowers, step machines, and arc trainers are among the cardio machines available at the facility.

     Queens College's residential life is lovely and secure.
