BA in Italian Studies, Transnational Emphasis

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of California Santa Barbara

Program Overview

Transnational Italian Studies is an interdisciplinary major that combines a novel approach to the study of a national culture with courses taught in English chosen from a broad spectrum of fields, including history, art history, music, gender and ethnic studies, film studies, and comparative studies. Our major challenges the opposition between nation and globalization by studying the imagined community of Italians from a transnational perspective: namely, by revealing simultaneously how Italian politics, arts, and culture have been pivotal in shaping the present world, and how the world has participated in shaping Italian identity and Italians. As a student in Transnational Italian Studies, you’ll not only learn to appreciate the global construction of Italian-ness but you’ll also gain a perspective to be applied to any nation in the contemporary world. At the same time, you’ll benefit from all the advantages of a liberal arts education that will equip you to pursue a career in media, law, international commerce and finance, education, entertainment, public health, government service, travel and tourism, or communications, among others.
