Biopharmaceutical Sciences (BA)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southern California

Program Overview

The B.A. in Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Southern California gives students an interdisciplinary understanding of how medicines are discovered, developed, regulated, marketed, and brought into healthcare. It is particularly suited to students interested in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, research, healthcare, business, or further study in areas such as medicine, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, business, finance, or law.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students begin by building their scientific and quantitative foundation through courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, and introductory pharmaceutical and regulatory sciences. Coursework includes options such as MATH 125g Calculus I, CHEM 105aL/bL General Chemistry, BISC 120Lg General Biology: Organismal Biology and Evolution, along with introductory RXRS coursework.

Year 2: Students move further into pharmaceutical sciences and begin connecting biological science with the development and use of medicines. Key courses include RXRS 200 Approaches to Pharmacology and Drug Development and BPSI 402 Biopharmaceutics I, while additional biology, chemistry, statistics, and pharmaceutical science coursework strengthens the scientific foundation.

Year 3: The curriculum increasingly connects pharmaceutical science with the commercial and practical sides of the industry. Students explore subjects such as BPSI 407 Pharmaceutical and Health Economics, BPSI 410 Biopharmaceutical Product Development and Brand Planning, BPSI 411 Biopharmaceutical Marketing Analysis and Strategy, alongside advanced science courses such as BISC 320Lg Molecular Biology and BISC 330L Biochemistry.

Year 4: Students bring together their scientific, business, and pharmaceutical knowledge through advanced topics covering drug action, safety, biologics, precision medicine, research, ethics, and regulation. Courses include BPSI 403 Biopharmaceutics II, BPSI 405 Organ Systems Physiology, Drug Delivery and Drug Action, BPSI 406 Drug Safety Pharmacology and Toxicology, BPSI 408 Biologics and Vaccines, BPSI 412 Targeted and Precision Medicines, and RXRS 422 Regulation, Guidance and Control of Medical Products. The program also provides opportunities for directed research and an honors capstone project for eligible students.

Focus Areas

Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Discovery and Development, Biopharmaceutical Product Development, Biologics and Vaccines, Targeted and Precision Medicines, Pharmacology, Drug Safety and Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Economics, Biopharmaceutical Marketing, Medical Product Development, Regulatory Science, Research and Healthcare

Learning Outcomes

Students develop the ability to apply pharmaceutical science to real-world drug-development challenges, understand the chemical and biological properties of medicines, use concepts from genomics and molecular/cellular biology, pharmacoeconomics and big-data approaches, interpret research relevant to pharmaceutical and healthcare projects, and understand how pharmaceutical products move from discovery through development and commercialization. The program also prepares students for future academic opportunities in health sciences and related professional fields.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The B.A. is an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree offered through USC Dornsife and the Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. USC's official program information emphasizes preparation for employment in industry, government, research universities, and other research-focused environments, as well as progression to professional and graduate education. No separate professional accreditation is stated for the B.A. in Biopharmaceutical Sciences on the official program information reviewed.

Reputation (Employability)

USC Mann provides a strong research and industry-oriented environment for students interested in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical careers. A recent USC Mann graduate of the Biopharmaceutical Sciences program, for example, progressed to a Business Analytics Associate role with Pfizer's U.S. Vaccines Strategy Team, demonstrating the range of science-and-business career directions available to graduates.

The wider USC Mann undergraduate community also provides pathways into biotechnology, pharmaceutics, biomedical industries, and health professions, while the school offers a range of graduate and progressive-degree options for students who want to continue their education.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The B.A. in Biopharmaceutical Sciences gives students opportunities to connect pharmaceutical science with real-world drug development, research, business, and healthcare challenges. Through independent research, applied coursework, capstone projects, and exposure to pharmaceutical technologies, students can build practical skills that complement their classroom learning.

Students can develop practical experience through:

  • Independent research: Students have opportunities to take part in independent research and produce research outputs relevant to pharmaceutical, medical, regulatory, pharmacoeconomic, and healthcare projects.
  • Research-focused coursework: Subjects such as Discovery, Development and Marketing of Medicines, Biologics and Vaccines, Drug Safety Pharmacology and Toxicology, Targeted and Precision Medicines, and Rigor, Resources and Reproducibility connect scientific concepts with real pharmaceutical applications.
  • Industry and business exposure: Courses such as Biopharmaceutical Marketing Analysis and Strategy help students understand how scientific products are evaluated, positioned, and brought into the marketplace.
  • Honors capstone: Eligible students can complete a capstone project based on a research or professional interest. The project allows students to apply their knowledge to current issues and demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, ethical decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Industry-grade tools: A recent USC Mann Biopharmaceutical Sciences graduate reported hands-on exposure to modeling tools including MongoDB and SimulationPlus, showing how the program can connect students with data-driven approaches used in the biopharmaceutical sector.
  • Research environment: Students benefit from being part of USC Mann, where pharmaceutical research spans drug discovery, pharmaceutical sciences, regulatory science, healthcare economics, and translational research.
  • Professional community: USC Mann's undergraduate environment connects students with a wider pharmaceutical and biotechnology community, helping them explore different directions within healthcare and the life-sciences sector.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The B.A. in Biopharmaceutical Sciences is designed to keep several career and academic pathways open. Graduates can progress toward opportunities in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, research environments, government, healthcare, business, or further professional and graduate education.

Career progression can include:

  • Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry: Graduates can pursue opportunities related to drug discovery, development, product lifecycle, commercialization, and pharmaceutical business.

  • Research careers: The program prepares students for research-focused environments at universities, industry organizations, government agencies, and other research settings.
