Program Overview

The B.S. in Aerospace Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a hands-on, project-based program that prepares students for careers in aircraft and spacecraft design, propulsion, aerospace systems, and research. The program combines rigorous mathematics, physics, and engineering coursework with WPI’s distinctive project-based learning approach, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge to practical engineering challenges.

Curriculum Structure

First Year – Foundations: Students begin with Calculus I–IV and General Physics I & II, developing the mathematical and scientific foundation required for aerospace engineering. The coursework builds skills in mechanics, mathematical modelling, and the fundamental principles used to analyse engineering systems.

Second Year – Core Aerospace Concepts: Students progress into subjects such as Statics & Dynamics, Aerodynamics, Orbital Mechanics, and Engineering Experimentation. These courses introduce students to aerospace-specific analysis while providing opportunities to apply theoretical concepts through experimentation and design activities.

Third Year – Advanced Aerospace Systems: Students study Structural Mechanics, Flight Dynamics & Control, Propulsion, and Spacecraft Systems Design. They also begin the Major Qualifying Project (MQP), working collaboratively on a substantial engineering problem and gaining experience with real-world aerospace design and research.

Fourth Year – Specialisation and Design: Students select advanced electives in areas such as Mission Design, Satellite Systems, High-Speed Aerodynamics, and Spacecraft Control. The year culminates in the completion and presentation of the MQP, allowing students to demonstrate their technical, analytical, communication, and project-management abilities.

Focus Areas: The program provides opportunities to explore aircraft design, spacecraft and mission planning, orbital mechanics, propulsion, structural dynamics, flight controls, and advanced aerospace systems.

Learning Outcomes: Graduates develop the ability to solve complex engineering problems using mathematics and physics, design and analyse aerospace systems, conduct experiments, interpret technical results, and collaborate effectively on engineering projects.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The Aerospace Engineering B.S. is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, demonstrating that the program meets established standards for engineering education and professional preparation.

Reputation (Employability): WPI's strong emphasis on project-based learning, industry collaboration, and applied engineering experience helps students develop skills valued by aerospace employers. Graduates can pursue careers with organisations across aerospace, defence, aviation, space systems, propulsion, and engineering research, with WPI alumni working at major organisations including NASA and leading aerospace and technology companies.
