Biochemistry B.S.

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Illinois Urbana Champaign

Program Overview

The Biochemistry B.S. at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is an interdisciplinary program that explores biological processes at the molecular level through chemistry, biology, physics and related sciences. It is particularly suited to students interested in laboratory research, biotechnology, medicine, pharmaceuticals and advanced graduate or professional study.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students establish a foundation in biochemistry and the natural sciences through courses such as BIOC 190 Biochemistry Orientation, MCB 150 Molecular & Cellular Basis of Life, CHEM 102 General Chemistry I and CHEM 103 General Chemistry Lab I. The second semester continues with CHEM 104 General Chemistry II, CHEM 105 General Chemistry Lab II and MATH 220 Calculus.

Year 2: Students move further into molecular biology, organic chemistry and laboratory techniques. The sample sequence includes MCB 250 Molecular Genetics, MCB 251 Experimental Techniques in Molecular Biology, CHEM 232 Elementary Organic Chemistry I and CHEM 233 Elementary Organic Chemistry Lab I.

Year 3: Coursework becomes increasingly focused on advanced biochemical concepts and their application to biological systems. Students progress toward courses such as BIOC 455 Techniques in Biochemistry & Biotechnology, BIOC 406 Gene Expression & Regulation and BIOP 401 Introduction to Biophysics.

Year 4: The final year emphasizes advanced biochemistry, scientific communication and independent academic or research work. Key requirements include BIOC 460 Biochemistry Senior Seminar, BIOC 406 Gene Expression & Regulation, BIOC 455 Techniques in Biochemistry & Biotechnology and approved advanced science/technical electives, with students able to include BIOC 492 Senior Thesis within the approved elective hours.

Focus Areas

Biological chemistry, molecular biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology, biophysics, gene expression and regulation, biochemical techniques, advanced laboratory science and scientific research.

Learning Outcomes

Students develop an understanding of chemical reactions and molecular processes in living systems, together with laboratory, analytical, quantitative and scientific communication skills. The program also develops preparation for research and further study in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine.

Professional Alignment

No specialized professional accreditation such as ABET is identified for the Biochemistry B.S. in the official program materials. The degree instead provides academic preparation for research careers and professional or graduate programs in areas including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine.

Reputation & Graduate Outcomes

The university's official major profile reports that 90% of graduates are employed or continuing their education, with 54% attending graduate school and an average starting annual income of $56,431. Reported employer destinations include AbbVie, Evozyne, Epic Systems, HeartFlow, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Biochemistry B.S. provides strong opportunities to connect classroom learning with laboratory research. Undergraduate research is strongly recommended, and students can work with faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers through opportunities such as BIOC 290 and BIOC 492; research can contribute to presentations, publications and graduation with distinction.

Students can gain experience through:

  • Undergraduate research: BIOC 290 provides an opportunity to begin research with a faculty mentor, while BIOC 492 can support advanced research and senior thesis work.

  • Biochemistry and biotechnology techniques: BIOC 455 provides dedicated training in techniques used in biochemistry and biotechnology.

  • Senior research/thesis: Up to 7 hours of BIOC 492 Senior Thesis can count toward the approved advanced science/technical electives.

  • Research areas: Illinois biochemistry research spans chemical biology, molecular virology, genomics, microbial physiology and other areas of modern biochemical science.

  • Research environments: Students can pursue research across the School of Molecular & Cellular Biology and access available laboratories and advanced teaching facilities.

  • Career and professional development: The School of MCB provides professional mentorship, alumni talks, advising, career planning and information about summer research opportunities.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates can move into biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, industrial research, government research, food technology and other science-related sectors, while the degree also provides strong preparation for medical, dental, optometry and veterinary programs. The university notes that advanced degrees are often important for higher-level research and positions involving the design or direction of research projects.
