Bachelor of Science (Chemistry, with a concentration in Biochemistry)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Memphis

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry at the University of Memphis is designed for students who want to understand chemistry in biological systems and prepare for postgraduate study in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or related health professions. The program combines chemistry, biology, mathematics and physics with laboratory-based study, giving students a strong scientific foundation while allowing them to explore biochemistry through courses such as Biochemistry 1 and advanced biology or chemistry options.

Curriculum Structure

First Year: Students begin by building their foundation in chemistry, biology and mathematics through CHEM 1110/1111 General Chemistry I, Lecture and Laboratory, CHEM 1120/1121 General Chemistry II, Lecture and Laboratory, and BIOL 1110/1111 General Biology I, Lecture and Laboratory. These courses establish the fundamental chemical and biological concepts and laboratory skills needed for more advanced study.

Second Year: Students progress into BIOL 1120/1121 General Biology II, Lecture and Laboratory, CHEM 3111 Foundations of Inorganic Chemistry, and CHEM 3211/3201 Foundations of Analytical Chemistry, Lecture and Laboratory. The combination develops their understanding of biological systems while strengthening analytical and laboratory techniques used in chemical investigation.

Third Year: The program becomes more specialized through CHEM 3311/3301 General Organic Chemistry I, Lecture and Laboratory, CHEM 3312/3302 General Organic Chemistry II, Lecture and Laboratory, and CHEM 3411 Foundations of Physical Chemistry. Students develop a deeper understanding of molecular structure, chemical reactions and the physical principles underlying chemical and biological processes.

Fourth Year: Students bring their chemistry and biological knowledge together through CHEM 4511/4501 Biochemistry 1, Lecture and Laboratory, followed by an approved upper-level option such as BIOL 3130 Cell Biology, BIOL 3500 Microbiology, or CHEM 4512 Biochemistry 2. The degree also includes CHEM 4999 Senior Survey, while mathematics, physics and ethics requirements complete the interdisciplinary preparation.

Focus areas:

Biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, cell biology, microbiology, laboratory science, health professions

Learning outcomes:

Students develop analytical and laboratory skills, scientific problem-solving abilities, knowledge of chemical and biological processes, quantitative skills through mathematics and statistics, and practical experience applying chemistry to biological and health-related questions.

Professional alignment (accreditation):

The Biochemistry concentration is part of the University of Memphis B.S. Chemistry degree and is specifically recommended for students preparing for postgraduate study in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry and related health professions. The department separately identifies the B.S.Ch. Chemistry program as ACS-approved and ACS-certified; the standard B.S. Chemistry Biochemistry concentration should therefore not be described as ACS-certified.

Reputation (employability rankings):

The University of Memphis College of Arts & Sciences Chemistry fact sheet reports an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, 71% of chemistry graduates employed in Tennessee, and 73% employed in Memphis. For chemistry graduates overall, the same official Spring 2024 fact sheet reports average annual salaries of $48,000 at 1–3 years after graduation and $79,000 at 7–10 years after graduation, alongside a 16.2% projected 10-year job growth and 338 average annual job openings; these figures cover the Chemistry major broadly rather than this specific biochemistry concentration.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The program gives students substantial hands-on experience through required chemistry, biology and physics laboratories and through opportunities to participate in faculty-mentored research. The Department of Chemistry provides access to advanced instrumentation and specialized facilities, including NMR, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, chromatography, cell-culture and computational resources, allowing students to connect classroom concepts with real chemical and biochemical research.

Students can develop practical scientific experience through:

  • Biochemistry laboratory: CHEM 4511/4501 Biochemistry 1, Lecture and Laboratory gives students direct laboratory experience alongside advanced biochemical study.
  • General chemistry laboratories: CHEM 1111 and CHEM 1121 provide laboratory training from the beginning of the degree, while analytical and organic chemistry courses continue the experimental component.
  • Undergraduate research: Students can enroll in CHEM 4901, CHEM 4902 and CHEM 4903 Chemical Research I, II and III while working under a faculty mentor on campus or off campus.
  • Biochemistry research: Faculty research includes enzyme kinetics, lipid metabolism, high-throughput screening, site-directed mutagenesis, mass spectrometry and computational methods.
  • Research presentations: Undergraduate researchers can present their research results on campus and at regional and national scientific meetings.
  • Advanced analytical equipment: The J.M. Smith Chemistry Building houses equipment including a 500 MHz NMR spectrometer, liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer and circular-dichroism/fluorescence spectrometer.
  • Biochemical laboratory resources: Facilities include a plate reader, FPLC system, electrophoresis equipment, PCR thermocycler, CO₂ incubator and bacterial/insect-cell culture equipment, providing resources directly relevant to biochemical research.
  • Computational resources: The department provides substantial computational chemistry infrastructure and access to the University's High Performance Computing Center, with software including ADF, ADFGUI and AIM 2000.
  • Research centers: Students can benefit from nearby interdisciplinary facilities including the Bioinformatics facility, Biosurface Center, Biomaterials Lab, FedEx Institute of Technology, Integrated Microscopy Center and High Performance Computing.
  • Internship opportunities: The College of Arts & Sciences identifies research and internship opportunities as important hands-on components of its STEM education, while Career Services supports students in finding internships and experiential opportunities.
