4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The Biochemistry B.S. at Worcester Polytechnic Institute combines chemistry and biology with mathematics and physics, giving students a strong foundation for understanding the chemical processes that drive living systems. It is especially suited to students interested in biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, health professions, biotechnology, or graduate study, with hands-on laboratory and project work built throughout the degree.
Curriculum Structure
First Year: Students establish the core scientific foundation through courses such as CH 1010 Chemical Properties, Bonding, And Forces, CH 1020 Chemical Reactions, and CH 1030 Kinetics, Equilibrium And Thermodynamics. Biology and mathematics are developed alongside chemistry through courses such as BB 2550 Cell Biology, BB 2920 Genetics, and the required mathematics sequence, preparing students for advanced biochemistry and laboratory study.
Second Year: Students move into more specialized chemistry with CH 3510, CH 2640, CH 2310 Organic Chemistry I, CH 2320, and CH 2330, while continuing physics and WPI's Humanities and Arts and Social Science requirements. This stage strengthens students' understanding of organic chemistry, laboratory techniques and the quantitative principles needed for molecular science.
Third Year: The curriculum becomes strongly focused on biochemistry through CH 4110 Biochemistry I, CH 4120 Biochemistry II, and CH 4130 Biochemistry III, complemented by CH 4150 Experimental Biochemistry and CH 4170 Experimental Biochemistry II. Students also begin the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP), giving them an opportunity to apply their scientific knowledge to a substantial real-world project.
Fourth Year: The final year emphasizes advanced study, independent research and professional preparation through courses including CH 4160 Biochemistry, CH 4190, advanced electives, and the Major Qualifying Project (MQP). The MQP serves as the senior capstone, allowing students to work on a substantial research or project-based problem and apply the skills developed throughout the degree.
Focus areas
Biochemistry, biological chemistry, cell biology, genetics, organic chemistry, molecular science, experimental biochemistry, chemistry, laboratory research, mathematics, physics, biomedical science and project-based scientific problem solving.
Learning outcomes
Students develop scientific problem-solving, laboratory, research, quantitative and communication skills while learning to investigate chemical and biological processes. Through laboratory research, IQP and MQP experiences, students also develop experience applying scientific knowledge to real-world challenges.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). The Biochemistry B.S. also includes the technical coursework required for students intending to apply to medical, dental and veterinary schools.
Reputation (employability rankings)
WPI reports an average starting salary of $51,192 for Biochemistry graduates. Its official career-outlook information also identifies employers that have hired WPI Biochemistry graduates, including Pfizer, Moderna, Biogen, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Novartis, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, AbbVie, Amgen and Regeneron.
WPI's Biochemistry B.S. is built around learning by doing, with laboratory work, faculty research and project-based learning forming an important part of the undergraduate experience. Students can access state-of-the-art facilities such as the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center, work with faculty researchers, participate in projects in the U.S. or abroad, and complete both the IQP and senior MQP.
The program provides several specific opportunities to turn classroom knowledge into practical experience:
Faculty-led undergraduate research: Students can work with faculty, graduate researchers and postdoctoral scholars in professional research environments using modern scientific instrumentation and techniques.
Major Qualifying Project (MQP): Every Chemistry and Biochemistry major completes a senior MQP, providing substantial independent project or research experience before graduation.
Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP): Students begin substantial project work during the third year, applying their scientific knowledge to real-world problems, including opportunities to work off campus or abroad.
Hands-on laboratory work: The curriculum includes dedicated experimental biochemistry and biology laboratory experiences, including CH 4150 Experimental Biochemistry and CH 4170 Experimental Biochemistry II.
Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center: Biochemistry students have access to this state-of-the-art facility from the beginning of their degree, supporting research at the intersection of biology, chemistry and engineering.
Project-based teamwork: WPI's Great Problems Seminar introduces first-year students to collaborative problem solving, with students working in groups to investigate real-world problems.
Research projects: Official WPI examples include projects on the Evolution of Drug Resistance in Main Protease of SARS-CoV-2, pancreatic cancer combination therapies and research collaboration in life sciences.
Research instrumentation: Undergraduate researchers work with state-of-the-art instrumentation and techniques as part of faculty-led research.
Off-campus opportunities: Students may conduct project work outside WPI in the United States or abroad, providing exposure to different research and professional environments.
Co-op and internships: WPI provides opportunities for real-world work experience through co-ops and internships, allowing students to complement their academic project experience with professional experience.
WPI's Biochemistry graduates can move into research, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare and other scientific careers, while the degree also provides a foundation for professional and graduate education. WPI's official career data lists roles ranging from Research Assistant and Research Associate to Clinical Research Assistant, Associate Scientist and Analytical Development Scientist.
Typical career directions include Research Assistant, Research Associate, Clinical Research Assistant and Associate Scientist.
Students can build toward these opportunities through:
Career Development Center: WPI's Career Development Center provides resources and opportunities to help students determine where their degree can lead and supports connections with employers.
