Although initially associated with the analysis of genetic data produced in sequencing the human genome, bioinformatics methods are now used in a wide variety of fields including basic science, biotechnology, medicine, pharmaceutical development and public health. Undergraduate students who major in biology, chemistry, computer science or mathematics may elect the bioinformatics option.
