Welsh and Politics (BA)

3 Years On Campus Dual-bachelors Program

Cardiff University

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about language, culture, and how societies are governed, Cardiff’s BA Welsh and Politics is a truly unique choice. This degree lets you explore the power of the Welsh language and identity while developing a deep understanding of political systems in Wales, the UK, and across the world. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to shape public life — whether that’s through government, policy, education, media, or community leadership — while becoming fluent and confident in Welsh.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Build Your Foundations

Your first year is all about discovering the core ideas behind both politics and the Welsh language. You’ll learn how language shapes identity in modules like Iaith ac Ystyr (Language and Meaning) and Y Gymraeg yn y Gymru Gyfoes (The Welsh Language in Contemporary Wales), while exploring political power and ideas in Introduction to Political Science and The Good, the Bad and the Political. By the end of the year, you’ll have a strong foundation in political theory and the tools to read, write, and speak Welsh with confidence.

Year 2 – Deepen Your Knowledge and Skills

In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into both subjects and start connecting them to real-world issues. Welsh modules like Yr Iaith ar Waith (Language in the Workplace) prepare you to use the language professionally, while electives such as Cynllunio Ieithyddol a Pholisi Iaith (Language Planning and Policy) open your eyes to how languages survive and thrive. In politics, you’ll broaden your global outlook with modules like International Relations of the Cold War, Digital Technologies and Global Politics, or Political Psychology, gaining a more sophisticated understanding of how governments, societies, and individuals interact.

Year 3 – Specialise and Make Your Mark

Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll work on a major research project — either through Blas ar Ymchwil (Research Taster) or an Extended Research Essay — and can tailor your studies to your interests. In politics, you’ll choose advanced modules such as The Politics and Governance of Brexit, Global Public Health Governance, or even complete a Politics in Practice work placement, giving you valuable professional experience before you graduate.
