BA Architecture with Foundation Year

4 Years On Campus Foundation-program Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

This is a 4-year full-time programme, designed for students who do not yet have all the formal entry qualifications but are eager to train as architects. The first (foundation) year builds your skills in design, academic writing, presentation and technical drawing, then you move into the honours Architecture degree (3 years) at Manchester School of Architecture which is delivered jointly by The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University.

It’s well suited for students with creative potential, interest in built environments, sustainability or urban issues, or anyone looking for a strong foundation (in both senses) before diving into challenging architecture studies.

Curriculum Structure

Here’s how the learning unfolds across the years:

Foundation Year (Year 1 of the 4-year scheme)

You’ll be introduced to the basics: developing personal and professional academic skills including research methods, writing essays, referencing, confidence, time management etc. The foundation also includes work in Communication and Presentation Techniques (sketching, model making, basic CAD/digital work, presenting ideas), Analytical and Conceptual Techniques (learning how to analyse site, brief, concept), and Architectural Design Studio, where you put together a project brief and produce a design proposal.

Year 1 of Honours (BA Architecture, Year 1 after foundation)

You move into core modules like Design 1: Thinking by Making and Design 2: Shaping Concepts, where you explore space, form, materials, and begin making architectural proposals. Alongside that are Architectural Context (history, theory, culture) and Architectural Production (technologies and making). Through these, you’ll learn to write design briefs, understand historic and cultural contexts for architecture, and use both analogue and digital tools in design and production.

Year 2 of Honours (BA Architecture, Year 2)

Here, the work becomes more complex and you deal with larger or more challenging design briefs. Key modules include Design 3: Transforming Places, Architectural Integration, Design 4: Activating Places, Architectural Ecosystems. You’ll integrate environmental and sustainability concerns, urban theory, and become more aware of social/political dimensions in architecture. You also start thinking about technology in buildings more deeply.

Year 3 of Honours (Final Year)

This year allows you more independence. You’ll do Design 5: Strategy (setting your own design direction, critical thinking, thematic engagement), Architectural Positions (electives in history, theory, advanced humanities), and Design 6: Resolution, a capstone studio project synthesising all your skills in design, structure, environment, materials etc. At the end there’s often an exhibition or final show preparing you for graduation and professional practice.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From day one, you’ll be in a studio environment, working on design briefs and projects that simulate what architects do in real life. You don’t just sit in lectures — you sketch, build models, use digital tools, visit sites, get feedback from both tutors and industry experts, and collaborate with peers. The programme makes sure you have access to specialist facilities (workshops, making spaces, digital labs) so your creative ideas can be expressed and tested in many different media.

Here are the specific ways you will gain practical experience, and the tools & facilities available:

  • Studio learning & hands-on design work: you’ll work in Manchester School of Architecture studios at the Manchester Technology Centre; project-based learning begins right in the foundation year.
  • Digital tools & software: PC workstations with industry standard CAD, visualisation, image editing, web-design, and print software; Apple Macs for video editing, scanning and digital design.
  • Model making & workshops: you’ll get access to well-equipped workshops (wood, metal, plastics, foam, ceramics, glass, etc.), computer-aided manufacturing facilities, laser cutting, large-format printing, and more.
  • Field trips, external briefs & live projects: expect local fieldwork; visits to real buildings, museums; also there are “live briefs” via MSA Live where students collaborate with external partners on socially-oriented or real design projects.
  • Industry engagement: invited talks from practising architects and industry experts; practitioners contribute to teaching.
  • Library, archives & specialist collections: you’ll have access to library resources (including the Manchester Society of Architects' Library), visual resource centres, material stores, AV/video/photography equipment that supports both analogue and digital design.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the BA Architecture with Foundation Year at Manchester often progress into careers such as Architectural Assistant, Urban Designer, Project Manager, or roles in creative design and media. The programme’s strong industry connections and professional accreditation make you highly employable worldwide.

You’ll benefit from:

  • Access to resources from both the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, plus support from the University’s Career Services (available up to two years after graduation).

  • RIBA validation of the BA and ARB prescription until 2027, with recognition by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM).

  • Excellent employability outcomes, with median salaries around £33,000–£37,000 within five years of graduation.

  • Partnerships with leading firms such as Atkins, BDP, Foster + Partners, and Sheppard Robson, alongside live project briefs and guest lectures.

  • A qualification that provides Part 1 of the route to becoming a chartered architect, opening doors to both practice and postgraduate study.

Further Academic Progression:

Most graduates continue to the Master of Architecture (MArch), which is the essential Part 2 qualification for full professional registration. You can also specialise in areas such as Urban Design, Sustainable Architecture, or Landscape Architecture. For those drawn to research or teaching, postgraduate study can continue into MPhil or PhD programmes.
