Program Overview

The Master of Architecture/Master of Urban Design is a multidisciplinary double master's degree for students who want to shape the built environment at both the building and city scale, combining architectural creativity with an understanding of how cities respond to social, environmental and economic challenges. Students develop expertise through intensive design studios, architectural technology, urban design, planning and sustainability, ultimately bringing these areas together through an advanced Architecture and Urban Design Thesis.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Architectural Foundations

The first year establishes a strong foundation in architectural thinking, design and construction through Master of Architecture Studio A and Master of Architecture Studio B, where students develop their ability to translate ideas into architectural proposals. Subjects such as Construction Methods A/B and Architectural Cultures 1: Modernism / Architectural Cultures 2: After Modernism build an understanding of construction, architectural history, theory and the cultural development of contemporary architecture.

Year 2 – From Buildings to Cities

In the second year, students expand from individual buildings to the wider urban environment through Urban Design Studio A and Urban Design Studio B, addressing complex city-scale design problems through studio-based investigation. Twenty-First Century Architecture, Planning Law and Statutory Planning, Strategic Plan Making, and Introduction to High Performance Design introduce contemporary architectural thinking, regulation, urban strategy and environmentally responsive design.

Year 3 – Advanced Architecture and Urban Design

The third year develops advanced professional and technical capabilities through Design Studio C and Design Studio D, allowing students to tackle increasingly complex architectural projects while integrating technical, environmental and urban considerations. Students also study Applied Architectural Technology, Architectural Practice, Urban Design Theory, and The Economies of Cities and Regions, connecting design decisions with professional practice, technology and the economic forces influencing cities.

Year 4 – Integration, Specialisation and Thesis

The final year brings architecture and urban design together through Urban Design Studio C and Design Studio E, giving students the opportunity to investigate sophisticated design problems across building, precinct and city scales. The degree culminates in the Architecture and Urban Design Thesis, where students demonstrate an original approach to design synthesis and research, alongside electives that allow them to deepen areas of individual professional or academic interest.
