Program Overview

The Master of Business (Human Resource Management) at The University of Queensland (UQ) is a two-year program designed for students who want to build specialist expertise in managing people, developing positive workplace cultures and creating organisational value. Curriculum Structure

Year 1: The first year establishes a strong foundation in business and people management. Students develop their understanding through courses such as Management Communication (MGTS7610) and Managing Organisational Behaviour (MGTS7601) or The Fundamentals of Designing and Staffing Organisations (MGTS7612), alongside business-focused study such as Financial Management for Decision Makers (FINM7409) and Business and Society (MGTS7608).

Year 2: The second year moves into more specialised HR and career-focused learning, with Strategic Human Resource Management (MGTS7603) and Career Transition (MGTS7621) developing students’ ability to approach HR from a strategic and professional perspective. Students also complete additional HRM field-of-study courses and electives, allowing them to deepen their expertise and tailor the degree towards their career goals.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The Master of Business (Human Resource Management) has been accepted for Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) accreditation, with UQ stating that students completing the HR major could join AHRI as full members.

  • Work Integrated Learning: RBUS7999 Professional Placement gives eligible students the opportunity to undertake a professional placement and apply business knowledge in an actual workplace while developing employability skills and professional networks.
  • HR case studies: Strategic Human Resource Management (MGTS7603) uses case-study discussions to explore evidence-based solutions to strategic HR challenges, including HR strategy, employee resourcing, performance management, rewards, and training and development.
  • Small-group learning: MGTS7603 specifically incorporates small-group discussion to strengthen peer-to-peer learning and engagement during case-study discussions.
  • Practical HR application: The HRM field develops applied knowledge of recruitment and selection, performance management, career support and team development, directly relevant to professional HR practice.
  • Research experience: The Human Resource Management field includes research experience as part of its learning approach, allowing students to engage with evidence and contemporary HR issues.
  • Career-focused learning: Career Transition (MGTS7621) is included in the program to help students prepare for their next professional step and connect their studies with career development.
  • Collaborative learning spaces: UQ St Lucia has dedicated collaborative learning rooms, including spaces designed for different scales and styles of learning activity.
