2 Years On Campus Masters Program
The Master of Geographical Information Science and Technology is ideal for students who want to develop advanced skills in GIS, spatial data and geospatial technologies and learn how to use them to solve real-world problems. The course combines GIS, remote sensing, spatial analysis, databases and data science, while allowing students to focus on advanced GIS, data science, or environmental and sustainability applications.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Students begin with the fundamentals of geospatial technology through subjects such as Earth Surface Dynamics, Fundamentals of Geographical Information Science and Remote Sensing. They also develop digital skills through subjects such as Introduction to Databases or Introduction to Python Programming, building a strong foundation for managing and analysing spatial information.
Students then move into subjects including Spatial Databases, Spatial Data Interoperability and Integration, Advanced Spatial Analysis and Modelling, and Research Methods and Project Management. These subjects help students work with different types of spatial data, perform advanced analysis and develop the skills needed to plan and manage GIS projects.
Year 2
Students can choose advanced study in Advanced GIS and Technology, Data Science for GIS and Technology, or Environmental and Sustainability. The environmental pathway includes subjects such as GIS for Environmental Science, Environmental Analysis, Climate Change Risk, Resilience and Security, Water Security and Environmental Pollution, and Transforming Cities for Sustainability, allowing students to use geospatial technology to address environmental and sustainability challenges.
Students can complete the course through either a research or professional pathway. The research pathway includes Research Thesis in GIS and Technology A and B, while the professional pathway includes GIS and Technology Internship and Professional Practice in GIS and Technology, giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in research or a workplace setting.
