Monash University

Program Overview

The Master of Engineering in Energy Transitions Engineering is ideal for engineering graduates who want to build advanced skills for the rapidly changing energy sector. The specialisation brings together renewable energy, sustainability, energy efficiency, photovoltaics, energy storage and modern engineering systems, preparing students to contribute to the development of cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Students develop advanced engineering and professional skills while exploring modern energy technologies and systems. Subjects such as Smart Grids, Advanced Data Analytics for Engineers and Industry Experience help students understand intelligent energy networks, use data to solve engineering problems and gain valuable professional experience.

Students can then choose specialist subjects such as Biomass and Biorefineries, Sustainability and Innovation, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Engineering, Renewable Energy Systems and Advanced Photovoltaics and Energy Storage. These subjects allow students to explore renewable technologies, sustainable engineering practices, energy efficiency and emerging energy-storage solutions.

Students may also study areas such as Engineering Project Risk Management, Engineering Systems Performance Analysis and the Monash Innovation Guarantee. This helps them connect their technical knowledge with project management, innovation and practical engineering applications.

Focus Areas

Energy transition, renewable energy systems, energy efficiency, sustainability engineering, smart grids, energy storage, photovoltaics, biomass and biorefineries, engineering systems performance, sustainable innovation, project management and emerging energy technologies.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates develop the ability to apply advanced engineering knowledge to complex energy and sustainability challenges and evaluate emerging technologies in the energy sector. They also build skills in engineering analysis, system optimisation, research, innovation and developing solutions that consider environmental and sustainability impacts.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The course provides advanced specialist engineering knowledge for graduates with an existing engineering background. The Master of Engineering does not provide Stage 1 engineering accreditation; students seeking Stage 1 accreditation should consider Monash's Master of Professional Engineering.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

Students can gain practical exposure through industry experience, real-world projects, student teams and Work Integrated Learning opportunities. These experiences help students develop technical and professional skills and gain an understanding of how engineering knowledge is applied in the workplace.
