Master of Renewable and Future Energy

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Western Australia

Program Overview

The Master of Renewable and Future Energy is designed for engineering graduates who want to build advanced knowledge and practical skills for the fast-growing renewable energy sector. Students explore renewable energy generation, energy storage, smart grids and microgrids while gaining an understanding of emerging technologies and the economic and policy factors influencing the move towards cleaner energy.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students build the technical foundation needed to understand renewable energy systems through subjects such as Power and Machines, Engineering Electrical Fundamentals, Fluid Mechanics, Principles of Hydraulics and Engineering Thermodynamics, depending on their previous studies. They then move into specialised learning such as Chemical and Thermal Renewable Energies, gaining a clearer understanding of renewable energy technologies and their practical applications.

Year 2: Students develop more advanced knowledge of renewable energy generation, energy storage, transmission and distribution, including smart grids and microgrids. They also build skills in renewable energy resource assessment and engineering system design while examining emerging technologies that can support the energy systems of the future.

Focus Areas

Renewable energy generation, energy storage, smart grids, microgrids, marine renewable energy, biomass, geothermal energy, photovoltaics, electric vehicles, energy transmission and distribution, renewable energy resource assessment and low-carbon energy systems.

Learning Outcomes

Students develop a strong understanding of renewable energy sources, generation technologies and energy storage systems. They learn to assess renewable energy resources, evaluate emerging technologies, design renewable energy systems and contribute to multidisciplinary engineering projects.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The program is designed to help engineering graduates develop skills for employment in Australia's and the international renewable energy sector, with industry input provided through an Industry Advisory Panel. However, completing this course does not qualify graduates to practise as an engineer in Australia; students seeking an accredited engineering qualification can consider UWA's Master of Professional Engineering.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

UWA's research strengths in both traditional and renewable energy give students access to expertise relevant to the changing energy sector. The program also provides opportunities to connect with energy-sector professionals and develop skills suited to the rapidly expanding renewable energy industry.
