Program Overview

This graduate degree is for students with a four-year graduate degree in a relevant area that is not accredited by Engineers Australia.

It equips students with the technical knowledge and professional competencies to become professional engineers on graduation.

Successful completion of this course verifies attainment of the Stage 1 competency requirements of Professional Engineers according to Engineers Australia.

Structure of the Curriculum:

  • The program is a mix of highest-level engineering theory and practical skills, with the main focus on hands-on training and teamwork.

  • Several courses are:
    Mechanics of Solids and Numerical Methods
    Advanced Strength of Materials
    Automatic Control Systems
    Advanced Fluid Mechanics
    Materials Engineering
    System Vibration and Condition Assessment

  • Students are required to have a minimum of 12 weeks experience in the professional practice of engineering and maintain a formal logbook of their experience.

  • A significant research or design project that combines the knowledge and skills acquired on the course crystallises in the final year.

Accreditation:

  • The course adheres to the Stage 1 competency standards for Professional Engineers, as prescribed by Engineers Australia.

  • Graduates are deemed acceptable under the Washington Accord, enhancing international mobility within the engineering industry.

Campus Location:

  • The main campus of Curtin University is located in Bentley, Western Australia, some 6 km southeast of Perth's central business district.

  • The campus is provisioned with facilities and resources for students' learning and professional purposes.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Industry Participation: Participation in real engineering projects through collaboration with the industry.

  • Internships: Counselling to secure internships within various sectors like manufacturing, energy, consulting, and transport.

  • Research Collaboration: Collaboration with the faculty for applied research on areas of energy efficiency, robotics, and green technologies.

  • Student Competitions and Clubs: Participation in clubs and competitions to gain experience in mechanical design, teamwork, and leadership.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates are also well placed to work in fields of mechanical design, energy systems, robotics, manufacturing, and R&D.

Employers can be organizations like BlueScope Steel, AGL, Siemens, and government engineering organizations.

The program provides a vehicle for PhD research studies or cross-disciplinary professional careers incorporating AI in engineering, sustainable systems, and industrial automation.

Academic Progression:

  • Upon completion of the Master's degree, the students are eligible to carry out PhD research studies at Curtin or other leading universities.
