Program Overview

The Master of Public Health at the University of Tasmania develops advanced knowledge and practical skills to address contemporary and emerging public health challenges. Curriculum Structure:

Year 1: Covers Introduction to Epidemiology, Introduction to Public Health, Evaluating Health Interventions, Introduction to Biostatistics and choice units such as Global Health Systems, Systems Thinking in Public Health and Non-Communicable Disease Prevention.

Year 2: Covers Environmental Health, Communicable Disease Epidemiology, Public Health Surveillance, Outbreak Management, Health Research Methods and a capstone or major research project, depending on the chosen pathway.

Focus Areas: Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Promotion, Disease Prevention, Health Systems, Environmental Health, Health Economics, Public Health Surveillance and Research.

Learning Outcomes: Apply public health intelligence to decision-making, design and evaluate evidence-based interventions, use systems thinking, address health determinants and collaborate effectively to support health equity and population wellbeing.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The curriculum is benchmarked against competency standards articulated by the Council of Public Health Institutions in Australasia (CAPHIA). There is currently no professional accreditation required for public health tertiary qualifications.

Reputation (Employability): Graduates can pursue opportunities across local, state and national government, health services, non-government and international health agencies, humanitarian organisations and universities.
