Program Overview

The Juris Doctor / Master of Intellectual Property at UTS is a 3.5-year full-time combined degree designed for non-law graduates who want to qualify for legal practice while developing specialised expertise in intellectual property.

Important: This course is only available to domestic students.

Curriculum Structure:

In the first year, students begin the JD with core subjects covering foundations of law, constitutional law, ethics, criminal law, procedure, and contracts.

In the third year, students complete their remaining JD requirements and begin specialised intellectual property studies.

In the fourth year, students complete the remaining IP subjects, developing practical knowledge in trade marks, patent law, designs law and practice, copyright, and intellectual property practice.

Focus Areas: Intellectual property, copyright, patents, trade marks, designs, commercial law, Australian law, international law, legal ethics, and IP practice.

Learning Outcomes: Analyse complex legal and IP issues, conduct legal research, develop persuasive legal arguments, advise on IP protection and infringement, and apply legal knowledge to professional situations.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The JD component satisfies the academic requirements for admission as a lawyer in NSW, subject to completing Practical Legal Training and other admission requirements. The IP component can also meet the knowledge requirements for registration as a patent attorney in Australia and New Zealand and a trade marks attorney in Australia.
