Master of Philosophy (Chemistry)

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Monash University

Program Overview

The Master of Philosophy (Chemistry) at Monash University is a two-year research master’s designed for students who want to develop advanced research capability and make an original contribution to chemistry under academic supervision. Rather than following a conventional coursework structure, students undertake an independent research project in areas such as analytical and environmental chemistry, chemical biology, materials science and nanotechnology, green chemistry, synthesis and catalysis, spectroscopy, or solar energy conversion.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
The first year focuses on establishing the research foundation, developing a research question, reviewing relevant scientific literature and beginning supervised investigation in the chosen chemistry area. Students also complete Monash’s compulsory graduate research modules, including Monash Graduate Research Induction, Research Integrity, Respectful Research at Monash, and Cultural Foundations: Building your knowledge of Australia’s First Peoples, while progressing their research project and participating in relevant seminars.

Year 2:
In the second year, students deepen their specialist investigation, analyse and interpret research findings, and refine their contribution to the selected chemistry field. The program culminates in a research thesis of up to 35,000 words, demonstrating the student’s ability to conduct independent research and contribute to knowledge; chemistry research can span areas such as materials science and nanotechnology, green chemistry, synthesis and catalysis, analytical sciences, chemical biology and computational chemistry.

Focus Areas

Analytical and environmental chemistry, chemical biology, computational chemistry, materials science and nanotechnology, green chemistry, synthesis and catalysis, surfaces and surfactants, crystallography, biospectroscopy, spectroscopy, solar energy conversion.

Learning Outcomes

Independent research, advanced research methodology, critical analysis of scientific information, research design, data analysis and interpretation, scientific communication, thesis development, contribution to new knowledge, independent problem-solving, advanced disciplinary expertise.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The Master of Philosophy is classified as an AQF Level 9 Master’s Degree (Research) and its learning outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework and Monash Graduate Attributes. It is a research qualification rather than a professionally accredited coursework degree.

Reputation (Employability & Research)

Monash describes its Faculty of Science as a world-leading research community, with research intersecting with industry and government. Monash Science also reports that its high-impact research contributed to the university being ranked #1 in Australia by Nature Index 2025, providing a strong research environment for students pursuing advanced scientific careers or doctoral study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

For the Master of Philosophy (Chemistry) at Monash University, experiential learning is centred on independent research, allowing students to develop practical research skills within their chosen chemistry specialisation. Students can work across areas such as environmental and analytical chemistry, materials science, chemical synthesis and catalysis, and computational chemistry, supported by Monash’s dedicated chemistry research infrastructure.

  • Research projects: Students undertake an independent research project and demonstrate their ability to conduct research and develop independent scientific thinking.
  • Laboratories: The new chemistry building provides sophisticated teaching laboratories, research facilities and interactive research spaces designed to connect students with researchers and industry.
  • Analytical instrumentation: The School of Chemistry Analytical Facility provides access to NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, chromatography, infrared, UV and Raman spectroscopy, atomic spectroscopy, thermal analysis and X-ray techniques.
  • NMR and mass spectrometry: Available instruments include 300, 400 and 600 MHz NMR, LC/MS/MS, GC-MS, LC/ToF, ICP-MS, TG-IR and ICP-OES, with training provided for users.
  • Advanced characterisation: Chemistry research is supported by facilities such as the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy, as well as access to external facilities including the Australian Synchrotron and OPAL research reactor.
  • Research collaboration: Students can benefit from Monash Chemistry’s research environment, which includes collaborations within the School, across the wider Monash precinct and with external research partners.
  • Digital research tools: Monash provides research infrastructure including High-Performance Computing, Research Cloud, Research Data Storage and statistical consulting, supporting computational and data-intensive research.
  • Research themes: Practical research can be aligned with areas including Biological Chemistry, Molecular Biophotonics, Environmental and Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, and Chemical Synthesis and Catalysis.
  • Training and instrument access: Researchers using School of Chemistry instrumentation receive personalised training before independent access, helping students develop hands-on competency with specialist equipment.
