University of Western Australia

Program Overview

The Master of Energy Geoscience builds advanced knowledge of geological and geophysical data analysis, with a focus on energy exploration, sedimentary basins and the changing energy sector. Students combine theory with practical learning, digital tools, industry data and research to develop solutions for real-world challenges in energy and geoscience.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students develop a strong foundation through subjects such as Near-Surface and Environmental Geophysics, Tectonics of Australia in the Indo-Pacific and Petroleum Systems and Subsurface Characterisation. They also study Basin Analysis Techniques, developing the geological and geophysical skills needed to understand sedimentary basins and energy resources.

Year 2: Students explore advanced topics through subjects such as Advanced Energy Geoscience for a Low Carbon Future, Structural Analysis for Energy Geoscience and Advanced Spatial and Environmental Modelling. Students can tailor their studies with options such as Climate Geoscience, Critical Mineral Resources, Marine Geoscience, Geoscience Internship and Sedimentary Basin Field Excursion.

Focus Areas

Energy geoscience, geological and geophysical data analysis, sedimentary basin analysis, petroleum systems, energy exploration, low-carbon energy, carbon capture and storage, climate geoscience, critical minerals, marine geoscience, environmental geophysics, GIS, remote sensing and spatial modelling.

Learning Outcomes

Students develop advanced skills in analysing and combining geological and geophysical data while learning how to interpret sedimentary basins and petroleum systems. They also gain experience using digital technologies, 2D summaries and 3D models to investigate and communicate geoscientific information and address practical energy-related challenges.
