Curriculum Structure:
Year 1
Students develop core multimedia journalism and reporting skills across online, radio and video platforms, while building knowledge of international relations and human rights. Practical learning includes multimedia storytelling, video production, interactive content creation and reporting for Curtin’s Western Independent news website, supported by industry mentors and professional facilities such as the television studio. Students can also pursue interests such as political or sports reporting and access internship opportunities with major WA media organisations including ABC, Seven West Media, WAtoday and Network 10.
Year 2
The second year focuses on advanced journalism practice, research and professional production, allowing students to further develop their skills across contemporary media platforms. In the final stage, students complete a professional journalism project or research dissertation, strengthening their analytical abilities and creating a substantial piece of work for their professional portfolio; a high-quality dissertation may also support progression to doctoral study.

Typically, applicants require a 3- or 4-year bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field from a recognised tertiary education institution OR a Graduate Certificate (applicants may be eligible for credit for recognised learning).
Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in journalism, or any previous versions of the course at Curtin University are not eligible for entry to this course.
