Graduate Program in Mathematics

The history goes back to 1952 when the undergraduate courses in Mathematics were created, organized at the Institute of Mathematics. At this time, Portuguese teachers arrived in Recife by invitation, mainly from Prof. Luiz Freire, touched by the Salazarist dictatorship. Worthy of mention are professors Ruy Lu s Gomes and Jos Morgado. As a consequence of the strengthening of the teaching of mathematics, organized in its own Department and constantly fed by the admission of good teachers, the interest in scientific research was strengthened and culminated with the creation in 1968 of the Masters course in Mathematics.
