The beginning of the readings in history at Sofia University was set with its establishment in 1888 as a Higher Pedagogical Course at the First Sofia Men's High School. Since 1904, when the University of Sofia was renamed the University, the specialty of History has been studied at the Faculty of History and Philology. Until the middle of the twentieth century, Sofia University was the main and almost the only center for studying, teaching and disseminating historical knowledge in the country. Lecturers in it are prominent representatives of several generations of Bulgarian historians.
