MEng Mechanical and Materials Engineering

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Western University

Program Overview

Western University offers a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical and Materials Engineering, a 2-year course-based graduate program that is designed to broaden students' technical expertise in advance of senior-level engineering careers in industry. The program integrates mechanical principles with material science, offering a balanced foundation to respond to modern engineering challenges. Irrespective of whether you are keen on energy systems, manufacturing, or biomedical devices, the program is set to align with real-world applications and increasing industry needs.

Curriculum Format:

The MEng at Western is structured to ensure flexibility and relevance. Students can choose from a wide range of technical electives, which allow them to specialize in areas such as advanced materials, thermofluids, mechanical design, and biomechanics. The coursework typically comprises:

  • Core Mechanical and Materials Systems Engineering Courses

  • Professional Development electives such as project management, leadership, and innovation

  • Optional Industry-Based Project or Thesis, where classroom learning is applied in a real-world situation

The courses are taught by experienced faculty and usually consist of case studies, group work, and hands-on problem-solving that simulates the nature of the job.

Accreditation:

The course is offered through Western's Faculty of Engineering, which is one of the best in the country and globally for both education and research. Although MEng programs are not accredited to the same level as undergraduate engineering courses, they are highly regarded by employers and PEO (Professional Engineers Ontario) approved if paired with the applicable work experience.

Campus Location:

Located in London, Ontario, Western University is a lively academic community and a picturesque campus. Its engineering students have exposure to cutting-edge labs, materials testing facilities, and collaborative innovation spaces designed to encourage learning as well as experimentation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Western supports experiential education significantly and urges students to develop hands-on skills in addition to their formal study:

  • Industry Internships (Optional Co-op): Students can apply for internships with automotive, aerospace, biomedical, and energy firms—allowing them to build professional contacts and test classroom concepts in the field.

  • Capstone and Applied Projects: Many students complete design-based projects or collaborate with research teams on industry-funded challenges.

  • Research Assistantships: Even though the program is course-based, students can assist with research under the guidance of faculty, especially in the case of further studies.

  • Professional Development Workshops: The faculty conducts workshops on resume writing, leadership, ethics, and communication specifically for engineers.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Western's staff of Career Services for Engineers is dedicated to supporting students on their career journey:

  • One-on-one career counseling and advising

  • Resume preparation and interview preparation

  • Networking receptions and industry mixers with leading Canadian and international organizations

  • Western's vibrant and interactive alumni community, one of the largest and most generous in Canada

Employability:

MEng Mechanical and Materials Engineering graduates have outstanding opportunities for professional careers in the automotive, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, energy, and biomedical areas of engineering. The majority wind up working for companies like Magna, Bombardier, General Motors, Siemens, and Hatch—or in emerging sectors like renewable energy and robotics. The program is ideal for engineers who plan to move into leadership roles or transition into more technically sophisticated areas of specialization.

Further Academic Progression:

The students can choose to pursue Ph.D. studies or enter business and technology-related fields through courses like an MBA, Master's in Innovation, or Data Analytics. The MEng also provides a suitable platform for those intending to enter academia careers, provided they pursue research opportunities along the way or afterwards.
