Western University

Western University was founded in 1878. It is a public research university in London, Ontario, Canada. The main campus is located on 1,120-acres of land. 

University History

On March 7, 1878, Western University was founded by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron. University’s first chancellor was Chief Justice Richard Martin Meredith. The first four faculties on- campus were Arts, Divinity, Law and Medicine (London Medical College). The university began with only 15 students in 1881. In 1882, the name of the university was renamed to The Western University and College of London, Ontario. The first convocation of graduates was held on 27 April in 1883. Initially, the university was affiliated with the Church of England. In 1923, the university revised the name to The University of Western Ontario. In 2012, the university rebranded itself as "Western University" to give the school less of a regional or even national identity.

In 2021, Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked the institution 201–300 in the world and 9–12 in Canada. In 2022, QS World University Rankings placed the university at 170th in the world and eighth in Canada. In 2022, Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked the Western University 201–250 in the world, and 8–11 in Canada. In 2022, U.S. News & World Report global university rankings, ranked the Western University 294th in the world, and 10th in Canada. In 2022, according to Maclean's rankings, Western University ranked ninth in their Medical-Doctoral university category. University infrastructure & services

Campus-

Western University Ontario is in the city of London, Ontario, in the southwestern end of the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. Most of the campus is bordered by residential neighborhoods, with the Thames River flowing in the eastern portion. The central campus includes most of the university's student residences and teaching facilities. Student residences cover the largest part of Western's building area, with nearly 31 percent of all building space. In the 1920s the Western University’s present campus came into force. In 2000, the university’s main campus was re-conceptualized, with the major focus on academic buildings.  The oldest academic buildings within the main campus is University College and the Physics and Astronomy Building. The Amit Chakma Engineering Building is one of the newest academic buildings on campus, which opened in September 2018. The Western Interdisciplinary Research Building, or WIRB, is home to state-of-the art research facilities for the study of cognitive neuroscience as well as the Brain and Mind Institute, BrainsCAN, and the Rotman Institute for Philosophy as well.

Libraries-

 Western University consists of branch libraries, which plays an important part of the educational experience and an invaluable resource for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, but also for the broad community. The different libraries on-campus are- C.B. "Bud" Johnston Library (Business), Education Resource Centre, John & Dotsa Bitove Family Law Library, Music Library, Allyn & Betty Taylor Library, The D.B. Weldon Library. The library offers books, e-books and services to support academic studies and enhance research work at Western University. University libraries are focused to provide high-quality library resources, programs, and services to the students. The library provides flexible and well-equipped surroundings to everyone’s research and learning needs. The library supports the student learning experience, creation and administration of knowledge, and also contributes to advancements in teaching and research programs.

Housing Services-

On-campus- Western University’s Student housing and Residence Life offers 11 residence halls where students from all over the country and the world live, learn and grow together. Students have an option to reside in the residence halls and apartments.  The university’s residence halls include- Delaware Hall, Medway-Sydenham Hall, Saugeen-Maitland Hall, Elgin Hall, Essex Hall, Lambton Hall, London Hall, Bayfield Hall, Ontario Hall and Perth Hall. The Western University’s residences offer support and convenience, as well as opportunities for personal growth, cultural exploration, and interaction with all facilities and staff. The University’s residence halls are perfect for comfortable housing.  Students can select the room of their choice based on costs, hall facilities, location, availability. Through University’s affinity housing students can live in groups of like-minded students who share the same love for sports, literature, film and course. Western University provides medical services to students. The Health Services encourage students to live a healthy lifestyle in order to achieve their personal, academic and career goals. They also maintain an emergency response team which responds immediately to any accidents or injuries involving any person on campus. Primary and urgent healthcare, health clearances, routine women’s healthcare, emergency response and wellness education are all part of the services provided. Visas and Permits

As an international student, you will need to have specific permits and visas to study in Canada.

Initial Study Permit

All Western University students need to have legal status in Canada, and you will need to present your status documents to get your student card. If this is your first time applying for a study permit, you can do it at the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. You can apply for your permit as soon as you receive your Offer of Admission from the University of Toronto and decide to accept. Because the permit legally entitles you to study in Canada, you will need it before you enter the country.

Temporary Resident Visa

Students from certain countries may also require an entry visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), to enter Canada. TRVs are issued by Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC).

CIC’s requirements may differ depending on your specific geographic region. For instance, some CIC offices require proof of English language proficiency in the form of a standardized test (such as TOEFL or IELTS). A medical examination and proof of funding may also be required.

Western University provides a dining hall in the heart of the campus.  Dining is open to students, faculty, and staff. Dining plan offers different dining options which includes special dietary menus such as vegetarian and low-fat food. The plans are designed to fit the busy schedule of students, the plan assists all dietary preferences by providing a wide range of dining options and healthy food options. Crime Around the area-

Western University keeps safety at priority. University’s Police Department provides 24/7 assistance to deter crime, and to increase personal safety and building security. A security desk is located in the lobby of each residence hall, which assists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to ensure the safety and identification of those entering and leaving the campus buildings. Students can call an officer to escort them anywhere on campus 24/7. The University is committed towards providing a safe, secure living and learning environment for all students, faculty and staff.
