Established in 1878, the Western University (University of Western Ontario) is a public research university located in Ontario, Canada. The original name of the university was the Western University of London Ontario, and remained that way until 1916 when it was changed to University of Western Ontario.

The university comprises of 12 schools and faculties: Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Faculty of Music; Faculty of Education; Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Faculty of Information & Media Studies; Ivey School of Business; School of Medicine & Dentistry; Faculty of Law; Faculty of Engineering; Faculty of Health Sciences; and Faculty of Social Sciences. Western is home to world-renowned research centres such as the Rotman Institute of Philosophy, the Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment Research Institute, the Brain and Mind Institute, Robarts Research Institute, the Fraunhofer Project Centre for Composites Research, and the Bone and Joint Institute

The total student population at the university is more than 29,000 students of which over 19,000 are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. The student to faculty ratio at the university is 13:1.

The university also has three affiliated colleges: Brescia University College, Huron University College and King's University College. Research at Western is primarily focused on fours fields of research: life sciences and the human condition; culture analysis and values; the human and physical environments; and social trends, public policy, and economic activity.

The Western is considered one of the country’s most beautiful universities; its campus spans 400 acres of mixed architecture from Gothic-style buildings to modern, sustainable structures.
