MA Egyptology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Wurzburg

Program Overview

Egyptology has only existed as a scientific subject since J. - F. Champollion deciphered hieroglyphic writing in 1822. Its subject is the entire legacy of ancient Egyptian culture from prehistory to early Christian times and its impact on neighboring areas. The subject thus covers a period of at least 5000 years and extends geographically to an area that, apart from Egypt, also includes the northern parts of today's Republic of Sudan. In terms of content, Egyptology is an unusually diverse science, as it not only deals with philology and literature, but also with the history, religion, administration, economy, legal history, science, art, archeology and topography of ancient Egypt.
