MA in Language, Culture and Translation Conference Interpreting

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

Program Overview

The field of conference interpreting needs highly qualified teams of experts to facilitate intercultural communication during intergovernmental meetings, international summits, scientific conventions, symposiums, and conferences. Interpreters are responsible for the smooth flow of information across linguistic and cultural barriers, and are able to translate fine nuances in complex topics. For this, they require a number of cognitive skills and abilities in addition to a high level of competence both in the native and the foreign language. Interpretation is based on strategies and skill components that can be examined as part of Interpretation Studies. This program teaches rapid comprehension, analysis, categorization, and evaluation of oral (and sometimes written) communication, as well as the ability to take this information, formulate it appropriately, and present it in the target language.
