This University is one of the ten largest universities in Germany. It was first opened in 1477 by Adolf's successor. It became one of the largest Catholic universities in Europe. Johannes Gutenberg University is also considered as one of the most prestigious Universities in Germany.

The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is one of few campus universities in Germany. The university medical center is situated off campus, and all its institutions and facilities are located on the site of a former barracks in the southwest part of the city. The Campus has electron accelerator MAMI, the research reactor TRIGA, the botanical garden, a sports stadium, and an indoor swimming pool. Mainz Academy of Arts is located off campus.
