MTech in Agricultural Biotechnology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur IITKGP

Program Overview

The M.Tech. programme in agricultural biotechnology has originated from applied botany. Historically, applied botany was the oldest life science-based postgraduate course in the Institute. Over the years, there has been dramatic change in the field of botany with the advent of genetics, molecular biology, metabolic engineering and bioinformatics. All this leads to the emergence of an umbrella, termed 'agricultural biotechnology' that focuses on applied aspects of plant sciences leading to the improvement in the qualities and quantities of agricultural produces. In tune with the need, demand and progress, the curricula have gradually been modified and updated. The programme is primarily oriented to create specialized human resources that would meet the challenges and promises of life science-based technologies. The core subjects have focused on crop improvements using breeding and recombinant-DNA based technologies. Emphasis has also been given on the separation technologies for plant-based products.
