Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur History
The Indian Technology Institute Kharagpur is a public engineering institution established in 1951 by India's government. It was the first IIT to be created and is recognized by the Government of India as an Institute of National Importance. As part of Nehru's dream of a free self - sufficient India, the institute was set up to train scientists and engineers after India became independent in 1947.

IIT Kharagpur has a campus of 8.5 square kilometers and is a residence of approximately 22,000 inhabitants. IIT Kharagpur students and alumni are informally called KGPians. IIT Kharagpur has two festivals for students: Spring Festival (Social and Cultural Festival) and Kshitij (Techno-Management Festival).
IIT Kharagpur is 120 kilometers west of Kolkata. The campus is five kilometers from the railway station in Kharagpur. A group of engineers and architects led by Swiss architect Werner M. Moser carried out the layout of the present campus and the design of the buildings. In 2015, IIT Kharagpur had approximately 605 faculty members, 1,933 employees and about 10,010 students living on the campus. The campus has a total of 55 kilometers (34 miles) of roads. In addition to more than 25 central research and development units, IIT Kharagpur has 19 academic departments, eight multidisciplinary centres/ schools and 13 schools of excellence.The campus of the institute has six guest houses, a civic hospital, four nationalized banks, four schools, a counter for railway reservations and a police station.
