Structural engineering, generally speaking, is the study of the way force interacts with materials. Making a reasonably accurate prediction as to the behavior of complex structures under load, such as dams holding water or high-rise buildings in windy conditions, tends to require both expansive knowledge and attention to critical details. A Master in Structural Engineering program usually attempts to prepare graduates to make such predictions via investigations of fluid mechanics, finite elements, systems modeling and failure mechanics. Electives might include earthquake engineering, earthworks or poromechanics.
