These are multifaceted challenges confronting African states, societies and people. And hardly any of the usual recipes turns out to be reliable if you deal more intensively with the continent. Therefore, new and especially interdisciplinary knowledge is required. In Basel, knowledge about Africa has grown in decades, at the Center for African Studies (ZASB) the competences could finally be bundled. Since 2002, it offers the master's program in African Studies, to which numerous disciplines from the social sciences, humanities as well as the natural sciences contribute. Key topics include: media and images, knowledge production and transfer, political rule and governance, health and social life, and the environment and development.
