Master in Cultural Anthropology

18 Months On Campus Masters Program

University of Basel

Program Overview

Cultural anthropology explores cultural processes and phenomena in Europe. By culture is meant the mode of how people shape their lives in dynamic negotiation processes and give them meaning. The subject explores their meanings and practices in a variety of everyday topics such as migration, media use, scene activities, leisure activities, work or identity politics. Cultural anthropology is characterized by a microanalytical view of concrete spaces, events, situations and people. She works with both ethnographic-qualitative methods of field research (participant observation, interviews) as well as with historical, image, text and object-analytical investigation tools. In the Master, students expand their subject-specific knowledge and work on topics that are characterized by their dynamism and complexity - because culture is constantly on the move and constantly presents researchers with new challenges. The main focus of the master's program is the Research Lab , which enables the independent development of questions, the reflected design of empirical research as well as a project-oriented working style.
