Program Overview

Bilkent is the only university in Turkey to offer postgraduate study in the history of the United States. The program welcomes students interested in all aspects of American history, including topics from the colonial period in British North America. Courses offered annually include traditional surveys and a range of seminars in cultural, diplomatic, intellectual, military, political and social history. Subjects of recent theses and dissertations include: Ottoman immigrants to 19th century Massachusetts; the life and times of Ethel Roosevelt; US relations with Italy in the Gilded Age; the role of American diplomats in WWI-era Palestine; US propaganda in Turkey during World War II; and the muckraking career of Ida Tarbell.
