Master of Science in Computer Science

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Computer Science at MBZUAI is a two-year, full-time, research-oriented postgraduate programme that empowers you with deep computational skills, advanced algorithms and AI-led systems knowledge to solve complex problems across technology domains. You’ll blend theoretical learning with practical research and thesis work—preparing you for careers in advanced computing, AI-driven innovation, systems design and research leadership.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 — Core Foundations & Technical Breadth:
In your first year you build a strong computing foundation with core theoretical and applied topics that typically include rigorous study in Advanced Algorithms and Data Structures, Computer Architecture & Systems, Theory of Computation, and Mathematical and Statistical Methods for Computing. Alongside core study, you also engage in Research Methods and Professional Development to prepare you for independent research, and begin exploring elective areas such as Distributed Systems, Security & Cryptography, Database Systems, and AI-related computing modules — giving you both breadth and depth across computing disciplines.

Year 2 — Specialisation & Thesis Research:
In the second year you deepen your expertise through specialised electives aligned with your career or research interests (for example Machine Intelligence, Networking and Security, Cloud-Native Systems or Human-Computer Interaction), and focus on your Master’s Thesis — an extensive research project where you define, investigate, and solve a substantial computer science problem under faculty supervision. This thesis work develops your ability to conduct high-impact, independent research and communicate results at a professional or academic level.

Focus areas:
Advanced algorithms; systems and architecture; databases and distributed computing; security and networks; electives linked to AI, machine learning and intelligent systems.

Learning outcomes:
You’ll graduate able to analyse and design complex software and hardware systems, apply rigorous computational techniques, conduct independent research, and communicate technical solutions to diverse audiences in industry and academia.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
This MSc is a Level 9 postgraduate qualification recognised by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research’s Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) and aligned with international standards for computing and research education.

Reputation (employability rankings):
MBZUAI is the world’s first graduate AI-dedicated university, attracting global talent and research leadership; its MSc graduates are well positioned for advanced roles in computing, software engineering, AI research, systems architecture and technology leadership across sectors worldwide.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students develop applied expertise by conducting original research in a chosen specialization, utilizing advanced laboratory facilities, and engaging with industry and community-focused projects. This hands-on learning is facilitated by the university's research-oriented environment and partnerships. The experiential learning approach is implemented through several key components:

  • Primary Research Focus: The core practical component is a substantial Master's Thesis. Students must complete an independent research project (12 credit hours) that involves designing, implementing, and evaluating a novel solution to a computing problem under the supervision of a faculty advisor.

  • Specialised Research Facilities: Students have access to KU's specialized research laboratories and institutes. These include labs within the Center for Cyber-Physical Systems (C2PS), the KU Center for Autonomous Robotics Systems (KUCARS), and the KU Center for Digital Supply Chain and Operations Management, depending on their chosen specialization (e.g., Data Science, Robotics, Cybersecurity).

  • Industry-Standard Software & Tools: While specific applications are not listed, the research-centric nature of the program implies the use of professional-grade tools relevant to each specialization, such as machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch), robotics simulators (Gazebo, ROS), cybersecurity analysis tools, and high-performance computing clusters.

  • Industry and Community Engagement: The program encourages practical application through industrial projects and community service. Students may engage in collaborative projects with industry partners or apply their skills to address community needs, linking academic knowledge with real-world impact.

  • Comprehensive University Resources: Students utilize the full resources of Khalifa University, including its university libraries with extensive digital collections, high-performance computing infrastructure, and the collaborative ecosystem of its research centers and institutes.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Progression & Future Opportunities: MBZUAI MSc Machine Learning graduates secure high-demand AI roles through the university's strong industry network and research focus, with early cohorts (2022-2025) achieving near-100% placement in UAE/global tech amid booming AI demand. Typical roles include Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, AI Research Scientist, and Predictive Analytics Specialist. Leveraging UAE's AI Strategy 2031:

  • University services: Dedicated careers portal, IEC incubator for startups, internship placements blending academia with industry.
