MLA Master of Landscape Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Newcastle University

Program Overview

Newcastle University’s Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) is a 2-year, studio-based programme that prepares graduates from any discipline to become skilled landscape architects. You’ll explore creative design, ecological resilience, and social impact through hands-on studios and fieldwork.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in theory and design, starting with Conceptualising Landscape and moving into Landscape Architecture Studio 1, where you explore site-based design projects. City as Landscape and Experimental Landscape Architecture I help you understand urban ecology and experiment with future-focused design approaches.

Year 2
The second year focuses on applied and professional practice. Experimental Landscape Architecture II and Materiality of Landscape deepen your design and research skills, while Design with Plants and Ecological Greenspace Management teaches ecological planning. You’ll also complete modules in Landscape Histories and Professional Practice, preparing a portfolio and gaining insights into planning, law, and the profession.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Newcastle University, the MLA is all about learning by doing. Students spend most of their time in design studios, collaborating on real-world projects, and exploring both urban and natural landscapes on field trips across Newcastle, the North East coastline, and Northumberland National Park. You’ll work closely with local practitioners, gaining hands-on experience that mirrors professional practice and builds your industry network.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical skills and experience:

  • Work in creative design studios to sketch, model, and develop ideas alongside peers.

  • Use a well-equipped workshop with 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC routers for prototyping.

  • Access a wet fabrication lab for experimental and ecological model-making.

  • Conduct ecological research and planting design in a specialized biology lab.

  • Benefit from print media and IT suites to support digital visualization and presentations.

  • Participate in fieldwork including ecological surveys, walking tours, and design interventions in urban, rural, and coastal sites.

  • Contribute to research projects through the Centre of Landscape Research Excellence.

  • Use the virtual learning environment to collaborate on group work, submit assignments, and receive feedback.

These facilities and opportunities ensure you graduate with not only creative and technical skills but also practical, professional experience ready for the landscape architecture industry.
