MArch Architecture (ARB/RIBA part 2)

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Nottingham Trent University

Program Overview

The MArch Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2) at Nottingham Trent University is a two-year master’s that takes your architectural training to the next level and moves you closer to becoming a fully qualified architect. It’s designed for students who already have an undergraduate background in architecture and want to deepen their design ability, technical knowledge, and professional confidence through studio-driven, real-world learning.

Curriculum Structure

Year One

The first year is all about strengthening your core design thinking and professional understanding. You’ll work in the Vertical Studio on ambitious design projects and explore themes such as city interventions, while studying architectural theory, technology, and professional practice — learning not only how to design, but how to build safely, sustainably and legally.

Year Two

The second year focuses on independence, leadership and mastery. You’ll undertake an advanced design studio and complete a major Design Thesis based on your chosen interest — whether sustainability, heritage, future housing, or experimental technologies — giving you a strong personal portfolio for professional growth.

Focus areas

Design communication, architectural theory and research, sustainability and technology, project management and professional practice, urban and environmental design

Learning outcomes

By graduation, you’ll be able to lead complex design projects, apply technical and material knowledge confidently, navigate legal and regulatory frameworks, communicate ideas professionally, and produce research-driven and context-sensitive architectural solutions.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The programme is fully accredited by RIBA and prescribed by ARB, meaning it satisfies the educational requirements for Part 2 — a crucial step toward becoming a registered architect in the UK.

Reputation & Employability

NTU has a strong track record for graduate employability and industry connectivity, with alumni progressing into well-known studios, urban design consultancies, and public-sector roles. Students also benefit from excellent studio facilities, opportunities to exhibit their work, and ongoing exposure to practicing architects.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At NTU, the MArch isn’t just about talking or theorising architecture — you actually do architecture every day. You’ll spend most of your week working in dedicated design studios, building models, testing materials, and developing drawings and digital experiments just like you would in a professional practice. The course is built around hands-on learning: live project briefs, creative team-based studio culture, crits with tutors and visiting architects, and time spent in workshops and digital labs where ideas become physical and visual.

From physical model-making to BIM workflows to VR walkthroughs, you’ll get comfortable designing and refining projects in a highly practical, studio-driven environment.

Here’s what that looks like in action:

  • Purpose-built architecture studios in the Arkwright building where you work and collaborate daily — with space for pin-ups, tutorials, presentations and group design reviews.

  • Fully equipped model-making workshops with machinery for wood, plastics, casting and precision prototyping to support physical models and spatial experiments.

  • Concrete and materials testing labs where you can explore the performance of structures, materials and building techniques.

  • 3D-printing and rapid-prototyping facilities so you can transform digital concepts into detailed physical models.

  • A digital architecture suite with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, 3ds Max and V-Ray — preparing you to work at professional studio level.

  • VR and visualisation facilities that enable immersive walkthroughs and spatial research — ideal for design development and presentations.

  • Group studio projects and live collaborative briefs that replicate the way architectural teams work in practice.

  • Study trips and real-site visits that help you explore built environments, understand context and see construction and design decisions first-hand.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of NTU’s MArch Architecture step into the professional world with the skills and confidence to work on real architectural projects from day one. Many move directly into roles such as Architect / Architectural Designer, Project Architect, Urban or Sustainable Design Consultant, or Design Researcher / Design Manager, and the degree puts you firmly on the recognised pathway toward full professional registration. With RIBA/ARB Part 2 in place, you’ll be well equipped to progress toward becoming a registered architect in the UK and internationally.

And NTU gives you the right support to get there:

  • Dedicated guidance from NTU’s Employability team and careers specialists who help you refine your portfolio, prepare for interviews, and connect with part-time and graduate opportunities while you study.

  • A strong record of graduate success — NTU is ranked among the top universities in the UK for the percentage of students securing graduate-level roles or further study within 15 months of finishing.

  • Close industry connections, with graduates progressing into well-known architecture studios, consultancies and built-environment organisations, which helps bridge the transition from university to practice.

  • RIBA and ARB accreditation built into the programme, ensuring that you meet the educational requirements needed to work toward chartered architect status over the long term.

  • Opportunities to showcase your work publicly at NTU exhibitions and degree shows, giving your portfolio visibility and helping you make connections with employers from early on.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing your MArch Part 2, the natural next step toward becoming a fully registered architect is the Part 3 qualification. If you’re more research-focused, you could also progress into doctoral study (PhD) or specialised postgraduate pathways in areas such as sustainable architecture, urban design, or digital and computational design — all building on the strong design, research and technical foundation you gain during the MArch.
