MArch Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Sheffield Hallam University

Program Overview

The MArch Architecture at Sheffield Hallam blends design creativity with social, cultural and environmental responsibility. It’s perfect for students who want to shape the future of architecture through sustainable, community-driven and technically informed design.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
You build a strong foundation in sustainable and ethical design thinking. Through modules such as Construction Ecologies and Design Studio 4A (Extended), you explore how buildings respond to ecological realities and real urban contexts, while The Praxis of Architecture 1: Theory & Recent History helps you understand architecture’s wider cultural and social responsibility.

Year 2
This year focuses on connecting academic learning with professional practice. A structured work-based learning route gives you real industry experience, allowing you to apply your design, communication and problem-solving skills within an architectural workplace.

Final Year
You bring everything together in a professional-level portfolio. Design Studio 6 and the Critical Study give you the space to realise an ambitious architectural project supported by rigorous research, demonstrating both creativity and technical resolution.

Focus areas: sustainable and ecological architecture; socially responsive design; urban context and community impact; architectural theory and history; professional practice and work-based learning; design thesis development.

Learning outcomes: Design buildings and spaces that are socially and environmentally responsible; apply sustainable construction knowledge; integrate cultural, technical and regulatory considerations into design; operate confidently in professional practice; produce a research-informed architectural portfolio.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Fully accredited by RIBA and ARB, meeting the recognised Part 2 requirement toward becoming a registered architect in the UK.

Reputation (employability rankings): Sheffield Hallam reports strong employment outcomes, with the vast majority of architecture graduates progressing into work or further study soon after finishing their course — a reflection of the school’s industry-aligned curriculum and professional reputation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What really defines the MArch Architecture at Sheffield Hallam is how much you learn through practice. From day one you’ll be working in studio environments, developing design proposals, and putting ideas to the test using industry-level tools and facilities. Rather than only imagining how architecture should work, you get to design it, model it, prototype it and see how it performs in real contexts — the way professionals do.

To make that possible, the course gives you direct access to facilities and resources such as:

  • 24/7 design studios and model-making labs where you can draw, build, test and refine ideas in both digital and physical form

  • advanced workshops equipped with laser cutters, CNC routers and 3D printers for prototyping and architectural experimentation

  • industry-standard digital design software integrated into studio teaching to help you visualise, simulate and present architectural proposals

  • field trips, live projects and practice visits that allow you to test and apply your design thinking in real buildings, landscapes and communities

  • a teaching culture led by practising architects and active researchers who bring current industry thinking directly into studio discussions and crit sessions

Students often describe the learning experience as the closest thing to working in a real practice — because every project builds skills you’ll take into your professional career.
