MA Architectural Design

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

The MA Architectural Design at the University of Sheffield is a one-year, studio-based master’s that helps you develop a distinctive, research-informed design practice through real-world projects. It’s perfect for students passionate about architectural innovation, theory, and social or environmental impact, looking to strengthen both creative and critical skills.

Curriculum Structure

Throughout the year, you’ll work intensively in design studios while engaging with seminars and research modules. Reflections on Architectural Design encourages critical thinking about your own design approach. Later, Design Project 2 and the Architectural Design Thesis Project let you push your ideas further, integrating sustainability, technology, and social impact. Optional modules allow you to explore areas like parametric design, conservation, or urban regeneration.

Sheffield’s School of Architecture and Landscape is renowned for socially engaged, sustainability-focused teaching, excellent student support, and strong graduate employability through industry links and mentoring programs.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the MA Architectural Design programme, you don’t just learn theory — you actively practice design. Most of your time is spent in studios in the Arts Tower, working closely with tutors and peers, using both hands-on and digital tools to bring your ideas to life. Through live projects, you’ll collaborate with real clients and community organisations, gaining direct experience in briefing, project management, and socially engaged design.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical skills:

  • Studio Culture: Work in open-plan design studios equipped for both traditional drawing and digital design, fostering collaboration and creative exploration.

  • Digital Media & Software: Access creative workstations, pen displays, photography facilities, and design software to develop advanced digital skills.

  • Fabrication & Workshops: Use 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, casting rooms, and hand tools to prototype and model your ideas.

  • Live Projects: Collaborate on real-world briefs with local community groups, charities, or organisations, gaining teamwork and client liaison experience.

  • Collaborative Tutorials & Peer Review: Receive regular feedback in group tutorials and critiques to refine your ideas and communication.

  • Research Integration: Apply theory and sustainability concepts through modules like Reflections on Architectural Design and Environment & Technology in Design.

  • Urban Room & Community Engagement: Display your work and engage with the public in dedicated spaces designed for interaction and community-focused design.

This hands-on approach ensures that by the end of the programme, you’ll have both practical skills and real-world experience to confidently step into professional architectural practice.
